Amit Jain IIT-Kharagpur's New Registrar

  • IIT-Kharagpur appointed Captain (retd) Amit Jain as its new registrar. Jain was earlier senior advisor to Indian Navy at INS Angre in Mumbai.
  • Jain replaced outgoing registrar Tamal Nath.
  • In his three-decades-long career with the Navy, Jain held positions such as navigating officer, operations officer and executive officer. He was also in charge of admin logistics for ships as the commanding officer for the Indian Navy, INS Dwarka Okha in 2019

UGC Makes PhD Optional for Recruitment to Post of Assistant Professor in Institutions of Higher E...

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) relaxed the criteria for appointment of teachers in colleges and universities by reversing its own regulation making PhD degree mandatory for the post of assistant professors. Teachers' organisations welcomed the decision and said that they have been demanding that the UGC withdraw the 2018 regulation.

Andhra Govt. CTE Sign MoU to Establish 'Centre of Excellence in IT and Cyber Security'

  • The Consortium for Technical Education (CTE) and Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) joined forces to establish the Centre of Excellence in Information Technology and Cyber Security. This collaboration aims to enhance employability skills, encourage research and product development, and provide hybrid mode training programmes, which include an extensive range of interactive video-based training courses along with hands-on virtual labs managed on CTE proprietary Advanced Learning Management platform, webinars and in-person lectures, seminars on software and cyber security products and technologies trends, for students, unemployed youths, and IT/Cyber security professionals in Andhra Pradesh.
  • With this collaboration, APSSDC and CTE will establish a Centre of Excellence in IT and Cyber Security across various locations in Andhra Pradesh, in phases. This partnership includes access to the latest software & cyber security products, designing customised courses, providing qualified trainers, and offering joint certifications and Industry recognised certifications to all universities, colleges, schools and Government IT departments within the state.
  • The major objective of this project is to offer skill development programs and training opportunities that cater to the evolving needs of the IT and Cyber security industry.

IIT Guwahati Launches Online BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence on Coursera

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, launched an online Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree programme in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence on Coursera.
  • This new programme also provides multiple entry and exit options. If the candidate leaves the programme after year one, he/she will get an Advanced Certificate as part of the programme. If they leave after the second year, then they get a diploma, a normal BSc degree after third years and a complete BSc honours degree for completion of four years.
  • Additionally, JEE Main score is not compulsory but those eligible and registered for JEE Advanced (in any year) will get direct admission, while those without can complete an online course and gain entry based on their performance.

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) internationally acclaimed curriculum, CBSE-International or CBSE-i, has been making waves in 240 schools across 26 countries.
  • Since its introduction in 2010, CBSE-i has been catering to the educational needs of Indian families residing abroad. Recognising its effectiveness and alignment with international standards, the Indian government is now determined to expand the reach of CBSE-i schools globally.
  • The government understands the importance of collaborating with school boards in other countries, particularly those in developed nations.
  • As India holds the G20 presidency this year, wider partnerships with school boards worldwide will enhance educational opportunities for Indian students.
  • The CBSE-International curriculum has garnered praise for its ability to cater to diverse learning styles while maintaining high academic standards.
  • By expanding the international board, the government aims to provide students with access to global possibilities and encourage cross-cultural learning.
  • This initiative aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP), positioning India as a model for educational reform in emerging nations.

IIT Madras to Educate Students in Rural Areas of UP via Online Classes

  • IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation partnered with Vidya Shakti to take education to rural areas of Uttar Pradesh through the use of Online Classes and Virtual Reality (VR).
  • The Initiative has already been implemented in 100 villages of Varanasi District with the sessions being conducted in Hindi Medium for students of classes 6th to 8th.
  • This initiative is intended to tackle the 'knowledge gap' created by Covid-19 between students from urban and rural areas. The classes are focused on the fundamentals of languages as well as on maths and science.
  • 'Vidya Shakti' is an initiative of OpenMentor, formed in 2009 as a Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative of Softsmith Infotech Private Limited to cater to the online education and skilling of the student community in the country. It conducts online courses in industry-relevant software skills besides providing recorded sessions and online exams for the students to practice and do self-evaluation.

IIM Ahmedabad Announces 30 New Scholarships for PGP Batch of 2023-25

  • The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) announced 30 new scholarships for the incoming Class of 2023-25. The scholarships were contributed by the IIMA alumni through the IIMA Endowment Fund.
  • As per the release, a total of 10 scholarships of Rs. 10 lakh each and 202 scholarships of Rs. 5 lakh each will be awarded to students early in the first year and the second year.
  • In addition to these scholarships, the Institute has several others in the form of awards for Academic and all-round excellence and performance in specific subjects, which are either awarded by the Institute, alumni, individual or organisational donors.

President Droupadi Murmu Launches New ICAI CA Syllabus

President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the CA Foundation Day celebrations and launched the new syllabus of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). The event, marking ICAI's 75th anniversary, took place at Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi.
The new syllabus introduced by ICAI incorporates modern topics like Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain, aiming to equip CA aspirants with future-ready skills in line with International Education Standards and the National Education Policy, 2020.
The launch of the new syllabus by President Droupadi Murmu signifies a significant step in preparing CA students for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

National Exit Test for MBBS Students from Next May

  • The first National Exit test (NExT), a common licentiate examination to replace university-level final MBBS examination, National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-PG (NEET-PG) and Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), will be conducted in May 2024.
  • Clearing this examination will be a must to receive a registration as a doctor to practice medicine in India. It will also serve as a test for postgraduate selections for all specialties.
  • The National Medical Commission (NMC) made this announcement in a virtual meeting with medical colleges across India.
  • The medical education regulator also announced that the first step of NExT or NExT-1, which will test students on theoretical aspects, will be held twice annually in May and November while NExT- 2 which will evaluate students on practical and clinical skills will be held once a year.
