Duolingo English Test to Include Additional Subscores for Enhanced Language Assessment

  • The Duolingo English Test (DET) will now include new Individual Subscores like Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening along with existing Integrated subscores for Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production. This change will be implemented from July 1.
  • These new Individual subscores will give a clearer picture to the universities about a better understanding of a student's language abilities for real-world academic setting alongside helping students to understand their core competencies, DET claims.
  • After completing the test, applicants receive a score report containing both their overall score and subscores. The overall score, ranging from 10 to 160 in 5-point increments, aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the international standard for language proficiency.

IIT Kanpur's Artificial Heart Set to Redefine Affordability in Healthcare

  • IIT Kanpur is pioneering the development of an affordable artificial heart made from titanium, known in technical terms as the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD). This device is designed to assist individuals whose hearts are unable to pump blood effectively.
  • The artificial heart, named Hridayantr, will undergo its initial trials in goats before human testing. Professor Manindra Agarwal, Director of IIT Kanpur, confirmed that animal trials are imminent. Initially planned for implantation in pigs, extensive research led to the decision to use goats for these preliminary tests. This innovative project is being developed with the collaboration of students and the guidance of esteemed professors at the institute.

C3iHub, IIT Kanpur Launches Cyber Security Vocational Course with Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj Un...

  • C3iHub, IIT Kanpur launched Cyber Security vocational programme in collaboration with Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU) Kanpur, and Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj Innovation Foundation (CSJMIF), by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK).
  • This six-month programme aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the ever-growing field of cybersecurity. This course covers system security, malware analysis, network security, cryptography, and IoT security.
  • Meanwhile, C3iHub will provide Virtual Lab for course practical, technical help desk support for students, certification of participation/completion of the course and final assessment results for all students. Whereas, CSJMU is responsible to facilitate the smooth execution of the program and CSJMIF will provide a platform to run the programme.

IP University Receives Rising Star Award in QS Rankings 2025

  • Delhi's Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (IP University) achieved remarkable recognition by earning the 'Rising Star' award from QS World Ranking. This accolade, presented by Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President of QS, at the QS EduData Summit 2024 in Washington D.C., highlights the university's significant progress amongst Indian institutions over the past year. The announcement coincided with the release of the QS World University Rankings 2025.

IIT Bombay, Delhi Maintain Top Spots in QS World University Ranking 2025; MIT Remains Best Varsity

  • In the latest edition of the QS World University Ranking released in June 2024, 61 per cent of Indian universities ranking improved, with IIT Bombay gaining the top spot in India. Globally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained the 'best institute in the world' position for the 13th time this year. 
  • This year (2024), the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) climbed from 149 in 2024 to 118 in the 2025 rankings, that is, a climb of 31 ranks.
  • IIT Bombay is followed by IIT Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru with the two institutes ranked second and third in India, respectively. While the IIT Delhi climbed 47 ranks (from 197 last year to 150 this time), IISc jumped from 225 to 211 (14 ranks).
  • The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) has achieved the fourth spot as it went from 271 in the 2024 rankings to 222 this time. IIT KGP is followed by IIT Madras which climbed 58 ranks (285 to 227) this year (2024).

School Education Department Signs MoU with National Book Trust to Create Institutional Framework ...

  • The Department of School Education signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Book Trust to create an institutional framework for the Digital Library Platform, Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya. Secretary of the Department of Higher Education K. Sanjay Murthy said that the Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya will be available round-the-clock, irrespective of the geographic location of the readers, making books more accessible to them. He also added that the problem of last mile presence of a library for many states will be solved with Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya.
  • The digital library aims to resolve the 'last mile' accessibility issue for many states by offering over 10,000 books in more than 100 languages within the next 2-3 years. Currently, over 1,000 books in 23 languages are available.
