DARPG Launches Scheme and Web-portal for National Awards for E-Governance NAeG

  • Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances DARPG launched the scheme and web-portal for National Awards for e-Governance NAeG. The objective of the scheme is to recognise and promote excellence in the implementation of e-Governance initiatives. The purpose is also to encourage innovations in successful e-Governance solutions. DAPRG informed that the nominations for the National Awards for e-Governance 2024 can be registered and submitted online at www.nceg.gov.in.
  • The National Awards for e-Governance scheme is recognised amongst the most competitive and prestigious digital governance awards schemes in the country. The department will award 10 lakh for the gold medal and 5 lakh for the silver medal respectively, for the implementation of projects or bridging resource gaps in any area of public welfare. DAPRG said that there are five categories under which the National Awards for e-Governance 2024 will be conferred. These categories are Government Process re-engineering, Application of Emerging Technologies for providing Citizen Centric Services, District level initiatives in e-governance, Research on Citizen Centric Services by Academic and Research Institutions, and Replication of Top Technological initiatives.

Union Cabinet Allocates Rs. 2,500 Crore for Extended Interest Equalisation Scheme

  • The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sanctioned an additional Rs. 2,500 crore for the Interest Equalisation Scheme. The scheme is extended until June 30, 2024, aiming to support exporters from specific sectors and all MSME manufacturer exporters.
  • The scheme was started on April 1, 2015 and was initially valid for five years up to March 31, 2020.

Lok Sabha Passes J-K Reorganisation, Reservation (Amendment) Bills

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to nominate two members from the Kashmiri migrant community and one representing the displaced persons from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to the legislative assembly.
  • The House also passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to change the nomenclature of a section of people who are eligible for quota in appointment and admission.

RS Passes Post Office Bill to Amend 125-year-old Indian Post Office Act

  • The Rajya Sabha passed the Post Office Bill, 2023 that seeks to repeal the 125-year-old Indian Post Office Act and consolidate and amend the law relating to post offices in the country.
  • According to the proposed legislation, the central government may, by notification, empower any officer to intercept, open or detain any item in the interest of the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign states, public order, emergency or public safety, or upon the occurrence of any contravention of any of the provisions of any law for the time being in force.
  • The enactment of a new law in place of the Indian Post Office Act, 1898 is with a view to govern the functioning of the post offices in the country and provide for a simple legislative framework to facilitate the evolution of the post offices into a network for delivery of citizen-centric services.

Lok Sabha Passes Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023 to repeal the Legal Practitioners Act of 1879 and amend the Advocates Act, 1961.
  • The Bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha by Union Minister of State (independent charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on August 1 and was passed by the Upper House on August 3, 2023.
  • The Bill is part of Central government's endeavour to repeal all obsolete laws or pre-independence Acts that have lost their utility.
  • It proposes regulation of the legal profession by only the Advocates Act, 1961 and repeals the Legal Practitioners Act, 1879, while retaining a provision dealing with touts in courts.

After COVID Break, Centre Approves Fourth Phase Roll-out of GIAN Initiative

  • Past its brief discontinuation during the COVID period, the Ministry of Education rolled out the fourth phase of the Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet project to rope in eminent scholars from across the world to teach at Indian universities.
  • Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) initiative in Higher Education was launched in 2015.
  • The Central government has spent at least Rs. 126 crore in payment to support foreign faculty's travel and honorarium since the inception of GIAN. Each foreign faculty member is paid a lavish sum of $8000 (Rs. 7 lakh) for a week of teaching and $12,000 (Rs. 12 lakh) for conducting a two-week course.
  • As per reports, the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), after evaluating the scheme, recommended its continuation.
