Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023: New and Repealed Provisions, Drafting Errors and More

  • The Central government introduced three new Bills in the Lok Sabha to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Indian Evidence Act.
  • These are Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 to replace IPC of 1860, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 to replace CrPC of 1973 and, Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023 to replace the Indian Evidence Act of 1872.
  • The Bills have been referred to a parliamentary standing committee for further examination.

Govt. to Launch Vishwakarma Yojana for Skilled Traditional Craftsmen

  • The Centre is soon launching a special scheme 'Vishwakarma Yojana' for traditional craftsmen and workers, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech.
  • The scheme, which is expected to mainly benefit other backward classes (OBCs), will be launched during Vishwakarma Jayanti on September 17. It will have an initial outlay of Rs. 13,000-15,000 crore.
  • The scheme will benefit individuals skilled in traditional craftsmanship, particularly from the OBC community. Weavers, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, laundry workers, barbers, and their families will be empowered through the Vishwakarma Yojana.

President Grants Assent to Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023

  • The President of India Droupadi Murmu granted assent to the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 (DPDP Bill) after it was passed by both the houses of the parliament.
  • The DPDP bill was passed unanimously by the Rajya Sabha on August 9 while the Lok Sabha passed the bill on August 7 by voice-vote even as opposition leaders opposed it.
  • The Bill aims to manage digital personal data by balancing individuals' right to safeguard their data with the need to lawfully process such data for relevant purposes.
  • The Bill bestows certain rights upon individuals, encompassing the right to access information, request data correction and erasure and seek resolution for grievances.

Dharmendra Pradhan Launches DBT in National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme

  • To bolster the participation of industries and young individuals in apprenticeship training nationwide, Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan launched Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS).
  • An allocation of approximately Rs.15 crore has been made under the scheme which will benefit one lakh apprentices, and also help usher in a new era of skill development and training.

Gehlot launches free smartphone scheme in Rajasthan

  • Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday launched the free smartphone scheme for women in the state.
  • Under the Indira Gandhi Smartphone Yojana, the state government will transfer ₹6,800 to the e-wallet of a beneficiary through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) .
  • The beneficiary, after the completion of their KYC (know your customer) process, can then purchase a mobile phone of their choice in the camps set up by the government. During the event to launch the scheme the CM also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah over the Manipur issue.

Lok Sabha Passes Bill that Seeks to Push Theaterisation

  • The Lok Sabha passed a bill that seeks to empower the government to notify the setting up of inter-services organisations, including joint services commands, and bestow powers on heads of such organisations to act against personnel from any of the three services to ensure discipline and effective discharge of duties.
  • The Inter-Services Organisations (Command, Control and Discipline) Bill, 2023, was passed by the Lower House amid a renewed push for theaterisation, a long-awaited military reform for the best use of the military's resources to fight future wars.
  • The bill seeks to bestow powers on the commander-in-chief, officer-in-command or any other officer heading a tri-services organisation to take disciplinary and administrative action against personnel under them who are currently governed by the respective laws of the three services - the Army Act, 1950, the Air Force Act, 1950, and the Navy Act, 1957.
