DAYS AND EVENTS - June 2023

Jun 2023

Mar 30, 2025

Rajasthan Day

  • March 30 is observed throughout the state to mark the establishment of Rajasthan. On this date in 1949, four states- Jodhpur, Jaipur, Bikaner, and Jaisalmer- merged into the United Rajasthan State, and the area began to be referred to as Greater Rajasthan.
  • Previously, Rajasthan was referred to as Rajputana, signifying "Land of Rajputs." Rajasthan translates to "home of rulers". It lies in the northwestern region of the country and hosts cultural variety. Characteristics of the state comprise remnants of the Indus Valley Civilisation, temples, and forts found in nearly every city. It is categorised into nine areas, specifically: Ajmer State, Hadauti, Dhundhar, Gorwar, Shekhawati, Mewar, Marwar, Vagad, and Mewat. They are similarly affluent in their cultural legacy and creative achievements.

World Piano Day

  • Every year, on the 28th (if it is a leap year) or 29th of March, piano lovers celebrate World Piano Day. Commemorated on the 88th day of the year (one day for each key on a piano/keyboard), this day holds a special place in the heart of every pianist, music lovers and learners alike.
  • Nils Frahm, a German pianist and composer, founded World Piano Day in 2015. His reason behind this was to have a global celebration of this wonderful instrument that has shaped his music and of others for centuries. Justifiably, it is celebrated on the 88th day of the year, to represent the 88 keys of the standard piano.

World Theatre Day

  • World Theatre Day is celebrated every year on March 27 to remind us of the importance of theatre in society.
  • World Theatre Day was initiated in 1962 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is celebrated annually by ITI Centres and the international theatre community.
  • The theme for World Theatre Day 2025 is 'Theatre and a Culture of Peace.'

International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members

  • The United Nations observes the International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members on March 25 every year to honour the memory of Alec Collett, a journalist who died while on a UN mission after being kidnapped.
  • The International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members was first observed by the United Nations (UN) in 1993. The day was created to recognise the work of UN personnel who have been detained, kidnapped, or have gone missing while carrying out their duties on behalf of the UN. The date, March 25th, was chosen to commemorate the abduction of Alec Collett, a former journalist and UN staff member who was kidnapped in 1985 while on assignment for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Collett was held captive for over six years before his death in 1991.

World Tuberculosis Day

  • World Tuberculosis Day, observed annually on March 24, serves as a reminder of the urgent need to eradicate tuberculosis (TB), which the World Health Organization (WHO) calls "the world's deadliest infectious disease."
  • March 24, 1882 is considered a significant date in the battle against tuberculosis as it is on this day that Dr Robert Koch discovered the bacteria that causes TB. This groundbreaking announcement led to better understanding, diagnosis, and eventual treatment of the disease. It was not before the year 1982, on the centenary of Dr. Koch's discovery that the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD) proposed observing March 24 as World TB Day to raise awareness about TB and its global impact. The first World TB Day was officially observed in 1983, and since then, it has become an annual event.
  • This year's (2025) theme 'Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,' is a bold call for hope, urgency, and accountability.
