The 8th UN Global Road Safety Week 2025

  • The 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week is being observed from May 12 to 18, 2025. This global campaign aims to encourage safer urban infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists and calls upon governments and communities to implement proven measures to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners are organising the 8th edition of the UN Global Road Safety Week in May 2025, focusing on pedestrian and cyclist safety. The initiative aims to address the rising number of deaths and injuries caused by unsafe road conditions and motorist behaviours.

International Nurses Day

  • International Nurses Day is observed on May 12 every year. This day marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale who laid the foundation of modern nursing.
  • In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, proposed that President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaim a "Nurses' Day"; but he did not approve it.
  • In January 1974, May 12 was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

International Day of Plant Health

  • On May 12, the world observes the International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) to raise global awareness about the crucial role that plant health plays in ensuring food security, protecting biodiversity, reducing poverty, and promoting sustainable development.
  • The day was established by UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/76/256, co-sponsored by Bolivia, Finland, Pakistan, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Zambia.

  • World Lupus Day is celebrated every year on May 10.
  • World Lupus Day was first observed in 2004 by the World Lupus Federation (WLF) to spread awareness about the disease and educate people about lupus and to likewise rally support for those impacted by this illness.
  • The concept for World Lupus Day came from a group of lupus organisations from around the world who were united by the WLF to collaborate on a global campaign to bring issues to light about lupus.

  • On May 8 every year the global community observes World Thalassaemia Day, aiming to raise awareness about thalassaemia—a hereditary blood disorder—and to promote preventive measures, early diagnosis, and patient-centered care. This annual observance underscores the significance of uniting communities and prioritizing patients in the fight against thalassaemia.
  • The theme for World Thalassemia Day 2025 is 'Together for Thalassaemia: Uniting Communities, Prioritising Patients.'

World Red Cross Day

  • World Red Cross Day, also known as Red Crescent Day, is an annual event held on May 8 to honour the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman and the founder of the Red Cross, the world's largest humanitarian aid organisation.
  • The history of World Cross Day traces back to the aftermath of World War I when the Red Cross made enormous efforts to promote peace. The Red Cross Truce report, published at the 15th International Conference in Tokyo in 1934, outlined the principles required to safeguard wounded soldiers during the war.
  • The proposal was later implemented during World War II in 1946. In 1948, the Board of Governors of the League of Red Cross Societies suggested commemorating Henry Dunant's birth anniversary as the founder of the Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Since then, World Red Cross Day has been observed annually on May 8.
  • The theme for World Red Cross Day 2025 is 'Keeping Humanity Alive', which aims to honour individuals who dedicate their time and often their lives to ease the suffering of others and safeguard their intrinsic human dignity.
