Indonesia Independence Day

Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, celebrates its Independence Day every year on August 17. The country announced its independence on August 17, 1945, at the tail end of the Japanese occupation and then fought for four years against the Dutch before their independence was recognized by their former colonial lord.
The Indonesian independence movement officially began in May 1908, commemorated as the "Day of National Awakening". The early 1910s and 1920s saw the establishment of several political parties like the Indonesian National Party (PNI), Sarekat Islam and the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) and movements that supported Indonesian independence like Budi Utomo. Though many nationalists at first opted for cooperation with the Dutch to gain limited self-rule through the Volksraad ('People's Council'), the Japanese occupation of the East Indies as it was called brought a stop to that.
On August 17, Indonesian political leaders Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta declared the independence of Indonesia.

Bennington Battle Day

Bennington Battle Day, observed annually on August 16, stands as a revered state holiday in Vermont. This commemorative day honours the valour and determination displayed by American and Vermont forces during the Revolutionary War's Battle of Bennington in 1777.
The Battle of Bennington held substantial significance, marking a turning point in the Revolutionary War. This pivotal encounter proved instrumental in securing Vermont for the American cause and lifting spirits dampened by a series of British successes. Furthermore, the battle's outcome resulted in the capture of vital supplies crucially needed by the British.
The origins of Bennington Battle Day can be traced back to 1778, when the Vermont General Assembly passed a resolution to memorialize the valorous events of the battle. The inaugural formal celebration of Bennington Battle Day took place in 1780.

International Left-Handers Day

International Left-Handers Day, observed annually on August 13, is a global celebration that recognizes and appreciates the diverse skills, talents, and viewpoints of left-handed individuals. The day highlights the distinctive contributions left-handers make across various domains, from art and science to sports and daily life, emphasizing the value of diversity.
The history of International Left-Handers Day dates back to 1976 when it was inaugurated by Dean R. Campbell, the founder of the Left-Handers Club. The day's establishment aimed to raise awareness about the hurdles and experiences faced by left-handed individuals in a world predominantly favoring right-handedness. The objective was to address historical biases and prejudices linked to left-handedness while also commemorating the unique talents and viewpoints that left-handers bring to various fields.
The theme for International Left-Handers Day 2023 revolves around 'Left-Handers in Sports'.

International Youth Day 2023

Every year 12 August is marked as the annual celebration of International Youth Day. 12 August is observed as a day of awareness, designated by the United Nations (UN). The first Youth Day was observed in 1999 after the UN General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution accepting the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon.
International Youth Day is observed annually on August 12 with the goal of raising awareness on different concerns affecting young people across the world.
In 1965 the United Nations General Assembly began making a concerted effort to impact the youth. They endorsed the Declaration on the Promotion among Youth of the Ideals of Peace, Mutual Respect and Understanding between Peoples. They began devoting time and resources to empower the youth by recognizing up-and-coming leaders and offering them resources to meet the needs of the world.
The theme of International Youth Day 2023 is Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World.

This day is designated by United Nations and every year the youth organisations and members of the UN Inter-Agency decide the theme.
The day was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, following a recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon, Portugal.
The goal of International Youth Day is to promote the participation of young people in decision-making processes at all levels, as well as to highlight the importance of youth in building a more peaceful and sustainable future.
The theme for International Youth Day in 2023 is 'Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World'.

World Lion Day 2023

Every year, the global event of World Lion Day is observed on August 10 across the globe to raise awareness about the importance and protection of lions. Known as 'King of the Jungle', lions are an integral part of the environment and are posed with numerous threats such as loss of habitat, hunting, poaching and many others.
The occasion of World Lion Day is observed with the aim to raise awareness about the present predicament of lions and how the number of lions has reduced dramatically in recent times. It is important to educate people about the reasons for the threats faced by lions.
The history of World Lion Day dates back to the year 2013 when Dereck and Beverly Joubert, the founders of the Big Cat Rescue, the world's largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to lions drew attention to the declining population of lions across the world. The couple approached National Geographic in 2009 and joined hands with them for the partnership of the Big Cat Initiative (BCI). Then in 2013, World Lion Day was formulated to raise awareness about the conservation issues of lions.

NATIONAL HANDLOOM DAY: PM MODI LAUNCHES REPOSITORY PORTAL FOR INDIAN TEXTILES AND CRAFT

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, presided over the 9th National Handloom Day celebrations at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, Delhi today and launched the e-portal 'Bhartiya Vastra evam Shilpa Kosh - A Repository of Textiles & Crafts' developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology. The Prime Minister also visited the exhibition showcased on the occasion and interacted with the weavers.
Addressing the gathering of over 3000 weavers and artisans from across the country, the Prime Minister highlighted the contribution of the handloom industry of India and said that the confluence of old and new defines the new India of today. "The India of today is not just 'Local for Vocal' but also providing a global platform to take it to the world", he said. Highlighting the Swadeshi Movement, the Prime Minister said that it was not only limited to boycotting foreign-made textiles but a source of inspiration for the independent economy of India. He said that it was a movement to connect the weavers of India with the people, and this was the inspiration behind the government choosing this day as National Handloom Day.
