International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development

  • International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development is observed on December 5 ever year. The day is also referred to as International Volunteer Day (IVD) to recognise and promote the tireless work, not just of UN Volunteers, but of volunteers across the globe.
  • The United Nations General Assembly sanctioned the observance of International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development on December 17, 1985. Designated to be observed annually on December 5h worldwide, this day has since been embraced by the UN system, governments, civil society organisations, and others, fostering the spirit of volunteerism globally.

World Soil Day

  • World Soil Day is celebrated annually on December 5.
  • World Soil Day 2023 (WSD) and its campaign aim to raise awareness of the importance and relationship between soil and water in achieving sustainable and resilient agri-food systems.
  • In June 2013, the FAO Conference endorsed World Soil Day and later approached the 68th United National General Assembly and requested for its official adoption. Towards the end of 2013, the UN General Assembly designated December 5, 2014, as the first official World Soil Day.
  • According to the United Nations (UN), the theme for World Soil Day 2023 is 'Soil and water, a source of life.'

Navy Day

  • Navy Day in India is celebrated on December 4 every year to recognise the achievements and role of the Indian Navy to the country.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Navy Day celebrations at at the historic Sindhudurg Fort in Maharashtra and also unveiled a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot Fort.
  • Admiral R. Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, hosted the event, featuring operational capabilities with 20 warships and 40 aircraft, including iconic models such as the LCA Navy, MiG 29K and MARCOS.
  • Navy Day, celebrated annually on December 4, commemorates Operation Trident, the audacious naval attack on Karachi harbour during the 1971 War.
  • This was the first time the navy organised such a mega event, which did not take place at any major naval station.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

  • Every year, International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed on December 3.
  • In 1992, the annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was announced by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The day was celebrated with the aim of understanding disability issues and gaining support to ensure that their rights to well-being, dignity and equal opportunities are practiced.
  • The theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2023 is 'United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities'.

World Computer Literacy Day

  • Every year, World Computer Literacy Day is observed on December 2 worldwide to boost digital literacy and to support the initiatives for offering computer training to those who can't afford it. The day is aimed at empowering women and underprivileged sections of society with knowledge and information to make them a part of an increasingly tech-dependent world.
  • World Computer Literacy Day is an initiative of NIIT (National Institute of Information Technology), an Indian company. The day was established on December 2, 2001, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the institute.

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

  • The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, observed annually on December 2, marks a significant moment in global history. It is a day dedicated to remembering and acknowledging the brutal history of slavery and the ongoing impacts of its legacy. The day originates from the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others on December 2, 1949. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring struggle against slavery and its modern forms.
  • The theme for International Day for the Abolition of Slavery 2023 is 'Fighting slavery's legacy of racism through transformative education'.

National Pollution Control Day

  • The National Pollution Control Day is observed every year on December 2. It is marked in the memory of those who lost their lives in the 1984 Bhopal Gas tragedy that took place on December 2 and 3, 1984. It is estimated that at least 4,000 people died when a pesticide plant by American chemical company Union Carbide's pesticide plant began leaking the toxic methyl isocyanate gas into a populated area in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Ever since, December 2 has been designated as National Pollution Control Day to raise awareness about how industrial disasters can be prevented and pollution controlled.
  • The theme for National Pollution Control Day 2023 is 'Sustainable Development for a Clean and Healthy Planet'.

World AIDS Day

  • World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1. The day is dedicated to create awareness and educate people about AIDS, and different measures to prevent this incurable and lethal disease.
  • The first every World AIDS Day was recognised on in 1988 with an intention to create awareness about HIV/AIDS on global level, and commemorate the precious lives lost to this lethal disease.
  • The theme for World Aids Day 2023 is 'Let Communities Lead'.

Nagaland Celebrates Its 61st Statehood Day

  • Nagaland, a vibrant state in the north-eastern region of India, celebrated its 61st Statehood Day on December 1, 2023. This marked a significant milestone in the historical journey of the Nagas, who became the 16th state of the Union of India on December 1, 1963.
  • A notable feature of the celebration was the inauguration of a photo exhibition titled 'Nagaland at 60', organised by the Department of Information & Public Relations. This exhibition provides a visual journey through Nagaland's rich history, capturing the essence of its culture, diversity and progress over the past six decades.
