International Holocaust Remembrance Day

  • The International Holocaust Remembrance Day or the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust is an annual observance to remember and honour the six million Jewish victims and millions of other victims of Nazism during World War II. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust and the enduring need to fight against hatred, bigotry, and racism in all its forms.
  • The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27 as the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust in November 2005.

National Geographic Day

  • Every year on January 27, National Geographic Day is observed all across the globe. It is a day to honour the 'National Geographic Magazine', which has been published continuously for more than a century.
  • In 1888, the National Geographic Society was established as a means of advancing and disseminating geographic knowledge. And in the same year, the society launched "National Geographic Magazine," its official monthly publication. The publication aimed to inform its American readership about a variety of topics, including anthropology, history, and the natural world. However, due to its immense popularity, it didn't take long for it to spread all over the world. For more than a century, "National Geographic Magazine" has provided information to everyone with an interest—children, adults, teachers, history buffs, geography nerds, armchair travelers, and pretty much everyone else.

National Tourism Day

  • National Tourism Day is celebrated in India on January 25 to educate people about the importance of tourism. It was established by the Indian government to raise awareness regarding the importance of tourism for India's economy.
  • According to reports, the first National Tourism Day in India was celebrated in 1948.
  • Every year, National Tourism Day is celebrated with a different theme as the centre of attraction. The theme National Tourism Day 2024 is 'Sustainable Journeys, Timeless Memories.' It emphasises the concept of responsible and mindful travel.

National Voters Day

  • National Voters Day is celebrated on January 25 to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India.
  • January 25 is the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (ECI) which came into existence in 1950. This day was first celebrated in 2011 to encourage young voters to take part in the electoral process. The Election Commission's main objective is to increase the enrolment of voters, especially the eligible ones.
  • The theme for National Voters Day 2024, 'Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure' is dedicated to voters and conveys individuals' feelings and aspirations toward participation in the electoral process through the power of their vote.

National Girl Child Day

  • National Girl Child Day, observed annually on January 24, is a crucial initiative by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in India. It was launched in 2008 as part of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign, aiming to address the challenges faced by girls in Indian society and promote gender equality.
  • The primary objectives of National Girl Child Day include promoting gender equality, empowering girls through education and skills, protecting their rights against gender-based violence and harmful practices, and addressing issues such as child marriage.
  • The day reinforces objectives such as eliminating inequalities, ensuring respect and value for each girl child, upholding human rights, maintaining a balanced child-sex ratio, changing societal perspectives, and addressing issues related to health, education, and nutrition.

International Day of Education

  • The International Day of Education is annually celebrated on January 24. This year (2024) marked the sixth year of the celebration.
  • In 2018, January 24 was declared as the International Day of Education by a resolution that was passed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 3, 2018. Following this, the first International Day of Education was observed on January 24, 2019.
  • The theme of the 2024 celebrations is 'learning for lasting peace'.

Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Foundation Day

  • Northeast is an important part of India which is typically known for its tourism. Every year on January 21, people of Northeast celebrate the Foundation Day to commemorate their statehood.
  • The Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Foundation Day is observed by people of Northeast with great enthusiasm and grandeur. People participate in different events to showcase their rich culture and traditions.
  • On January 21, 1972 the three states - Tripura, Meghalaya, and Manipur received the title of full fledged States under the North Eastern Region Re-Organisation Act, 1971. Prior to this, Meghalaya was a part of Assam, and Tripura and Manipur were princely states.

Kokborok Day

  • Kokborok Day, also known as the Tripuri Language Day is annually celebrated across the Indian State of Tripura on January 19 with an aim to develop the Kokborok language. The day commemorates the initial recognition of Kokborok as the official language in 1979.
  • The Kokborok language, the official language of Tripura, is also known as Tripuri or Tiprakok. In 1979, Kokborok, along with Bengali and English, was declared an official language of the state of Tripura, India by the state government.
