World Hearing Day

  • Every year, March 3 is celebrated as World Hearing Day to raise awareness of hearing loss, promote ear and hearing care, and urge action to solve hearing loss and associated concerns.
  • The day was commemorated for the first time in 2007. Earlier, the day was originally known as International Ear Care Day. Later, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared World Hearing Day in 2016. Since then, the day has been celebrated annually on March 3.
  • The theme chosen for World Hearing Day 2024 is 'Let's make ear and hearing care a reality for all'.

World Wildlife Day

  • World Wildlife Day is celebrated on March 3 every year. The United Nations established this day to raise awareness about the necessity of preserving and protecting wildlife, as well as to promote sustainable practices that can help to conserve biodiversity.
  • The history of World Wildlife Day can be traced back to 2013, when Thailand proposed that the United Nations General Assembly establish 3 March, as World Wildlife Day. The day was first established in 2014, following the adoption of a resolution by the General Assembly on December 20, 2013.
  • The theme for World Wildlife Day 2024 is 'Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation'.

V. K. Paul Launches National Birth Defects Awareness Month 2024

  • NITI Aayog Member V. K. Paul launched the National Birth Defects Awareness Month 2024 at a function in New Delhi. The theme of National Birth Defect Awareness Month 2024 is 'Breaking barriers: inclusive support for children with birth defects'. Under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram of the Health Ministry, various activities for nationwide awareness of birth defect prevention, early identification, timely management, and psychosocial impact will take place throughout the month.

World Civil Defence Day

  • World Civil Defence Day is celebrated on March 1 every year. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of civil defence measures in safeguarding people and their property from natural disasters, accidents, and other emergencies.
  • World Civil Defence Day was first celebrated in 1990 by the International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO) to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the ICDO's Constitution.
  • The theme for World Civil Defence Day 2024 is 'Honour Heroes and Promote Safety Skills'.

Zero Discrimination Day

  • Zero Discrimination Day is celebrated on March 1 every year. This day is celebrated to spread awareness and highlight the urgency to end inequalities surrounding gender, income, health status, occupation, sexual orientation, drug use, disability, and other various aspects of life that directly or indirectly create segregation among people.
  • Zero Discrimination Day was first celebrated and observed on March 1, 2014. Zero Discrimination Day was launched by UNAIDS. The executive director of UNAIDS Michel Sidibe started it on 23rd December of 2013 with the major event in Beijing. This day is noted by the organizations that combat discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. UNAIDS is the organization that conducts programs on HIV/AIDS awareness and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. The main motive to establish this day was to work with discrimination against the people who were affected by HIV/AIDS and also bring equality among the person all over the world in every prospect because we have equal rights.
  • Zero Discrimination Day 2024 theme is 'To protect everyone's health, protect everyone's rights'.

Self-Injury Awareness Day

  • Self-Injury Awareness Day (SIAD), observed annually on March 1, is an international awareness day about raising awareness, understanding, and support for individuals who "harm themselves". This day is dedicated to shedding light on the experiences of those who engage in self-injury behaviours.
  • This day is observed with the intention of helping people who inflict self-harm on themselves and are too scared of asking for professional help. It helps in raising awareness of the importance of addressing this unhealthy behavioural pattern and getting help to the patients as soon as possible. In the present times, a large number of organisations and advocacy groups and professionals assist people who exhibit symptoms of self-harm behaviours.

Financial Literacy Week 2024

  • Starting in 2016, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has consistently allocated each year to the observance of Financial Literacy Week (FLW). The primary goal is to convey messages regarding financial education to the general public, fostering the empowerment of individuals to adopt responsible financial behaviour and make informed financial decisions.
  • The designated theme for the Financial Literacy Week 2024 from February 26 to March 01, 2024, is 'Initiate Wisely: Cultivate Financial Savvy'. The theme centres on young adults and students, seeking to imbue prudent financial habits from an early age. It promotes the cultivation of a robust financial groundwork, fostering enhanced financial security and the attainment of future goals.

Rare Disease Day

  • Rare Disease Day is observed on the last day of February every year to spread awareness about rare diseases among the people and provide a platform to talk about their impact globally. With 2024 being a leap year, the day was observed on February 29 this time (2024).
  • The day was set up by the EURORDIS (the European Organization for Rare Diseases) in 2008. EURORDIS is a non-profit alliance of more than 1,000 rare disease patient organisations across 74 countries in the world. It works towards improving the lives of more than 300 million people living with a rare disease around the world.

  • The theme for this year's National Science Day celebration is 'Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat'.
