Veteran Kannada Actress Leelavathi Passes Away

  • Veteran actress Leelavati passed away at the age of 85.
  • Leelavati had acted in theatre and movies. Leelavathi worked in over 600 movies, including Kannada, Tamil and Telugu.
  • In a career spanning more than six decades, the actress has starred in more than 600, films, out of which 400 were in Kannada. She began her career as a member of Mahalinga Bhagavathar's Sri Sahitya Samrajya Drama Company troupe. She made her acting debut in the 1958 mythological drama 'Bhakta Prahlada'. However, she shot to prominence as a leading lady with the 1960 historical drama 'Rani Honnamma'. Some of her notable works include, Bhakta Kumbara', 'Santha Thukaram', 'Bhatka Prahlada', 'Mangalya Yoga', 'Mana Mechchida Madadi' etc.
  • She was two times the recipient of the National Award.

Renowned Economist and Dalit Thinker M. Kunjaman Passes Away

  • Renowned economist, academician and prominent Dalit thinker M. Kunjaman was found dead at his residence. He was 74.
  • He served as an economics faculty at the University of Kerala, member of the University Grants Commission and professor at the Tuljapur campus of Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS).
  • In 2021, his autobiography 'Ethiru' was selected as the best autobiography by the Kerala Sahitya Academy. But Kunjaman refused to accept the honour.

  • Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, an unwavering voice of moderate conservatism and the first woman to serve on the nation's highest court, died. She was 93.
  • O'Connor's nomination in 1981 by President Ronald Reagan and subsequent confirmation by the Senate ended 191 years of male exclusivity on the high court. A native of Arizona who grew up on her family's sprawling ranch, O'Connor wasted little time building a reputation as a hard worker who wielded considerable political clout on the nine-member court.

  • Veteran actress R. Subbalakshmi, renowned for her remarkable contributions to Malayalam cinema, passed away at the age of 87. Her journey from being a trained Carnatic musician to gracing the sliver screen with her powerful performances has left an indelible mark on the hearts of film enthusiasts.
  • Subbalakshmi's journey in the entertainment industry began as a dedicated employee of All India Radio. Her passion for music and the arts led her to also serve as a music instructor at Jawahar Balbhavan, showcasing her multifaceted talents early in her career.

Ex-UK Finance Minister Alistair Darling, Who Fought Financial Crisis, Dies

  • Former British Finance Minister Alistair Darling, who steered the country's economy and banking system through the shock of the global financial crisis in 2007-08, died aged 70.
  • Darling was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown in June 2007, just as the crisis was brewing at some of the world's biggest financial institutions.
  • He oversaw the rescue of British lender Northern Rock a few months into the job. In October 2008, he played a key role in a 37 billion-pound ($47 billion) government bailout of Royal Bank of Scotland, Lloyds TSB and HBOS to help them survive the credit crunch.
  • Darling was a member of parliament representing the centre-left Labour Party between 1987 and 2015 and he served as chief secretary to the Treasury before being promoted to run the finance ministry by Brown.

Henry Kissinger, US Diplomat Who Shaped Cold War Diplomacy, Dies

  • Henry Kissinger, a controversial Nobel Peace Prize winner and diplomatic powerhouse whose service under two Presidents left an indelible mark on U.S. foreign policy, died.
  • Kissinger had been active past his centenary, attending meetings in the White House, publishing a book on leadership styles, and testifying before a Senate committee about the nuclear threat posed by North Korea. In July 2023 he made a surprise visit to Beijing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.
  • His 1973 Peace Prize - awarded jointly to North Vietnam's Le Duc Tho, who would decline it - was one of the most controversial ever. Two members of the Nobel committee resigned over the selection and questions arose about the U.S. secret bombing of Cambodia.
