Former Odisha Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare Passes Away

  • Former Odisha Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare passed away at the age of 95. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and former CM Naveen Patnaik expressed their deep sorrow over the demise of the veteran politician.
  • Bhandare was a senior Congress leader from Maharashtra and a former Rajya Sabha member for three terms. He also practised as a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court and served as Governor of Odisha from August 2007 to March 2013.

Jerry West, All-time Great and Inspiration for NBA Logo, Dies

  • Jerry West, widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all-time whose silhouette was the inspiration for the National Basketball Association's logo, died at the age of 86.
  • West played for the Lakers from 1960 through 1974, winning his only NBA title in 1972, and was co-captain on the 1960 Rome Olympic US basketball gold medal squad.
  • In later years, West served as an executive on several NBA clubs, and lastly the Clippers, his knowledge and guidance contributing to eight championship runs, six by the Lakers.

  • Sarod maestro Pandit Rajeev Taranath, passed away at the age of 92.
  • A distinguished exponent of Senia Maihar Gharana, Pandit Taranath was honoured nationally by the Government of India with a Padma Shri in 2019 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2000. In Karnataka, he has been bestowed with the Rajyothsava award in 1996, Chowdaiah Memorial award in 1998, Sangeet Vidwan award in 2018 and Nadoja award in 2019.

A.J.T. Johnsingh, a Renowned Wildlife Field Biologist and Conservationist, Passes Away

  • Noted Indian wildlife biologist and leading conservationist Asir Jawahar Thomas Johnsingh, popularly known as A.J.T. Johnsingh among wildlife enthusiasts, passed away in Bengaluru at the age of 78.
  • Johnsingh's journey began in the early 1970s as a Zoology lecturer in Sivakasi. His frequent field trips to the forests ignited a passion that led him to pursue a Ph.D. in wildlife studies. It was his groundbreaking work on elephants in the early 1980s that proved instrumental in the Government of India's decision to formulate Project Elephant, a significant initiative aimed at protecting the majestic animals and their habitats.
  • He is a recipient of various awards including Padma Shri Award for his exemplary work.

William Anders, Apollo 8 Astronaut Dies in Plane Crash

  • Retired astronaut William Anders, one of the first three humans to orbit the moon, who captured the "Earthrise" photo during NASA's Apollo 8 mission, died when the small plane, he was piloting, crashed in Washington state.
  • A U.S. Naval Academy graduate and Air Force pilot, Anders joined NASA in 1963 as a member of the third group of astronauts. He did not go into space until December 1968, when Apollo 8 lifted off on the first crewed mission to leave Earth orbit and travel 240,000 miles (386,000 km) to the moon. Anders was the 'rookie' on the crew, alongside Frank Borman, the mission commander, and James Lovell, who had flown with Borman on Gemini 7 in 1965 and later commanded the ill-fated Apollo 13.
  • Anders took the famous 'Earthrise' photo that showed our world with the lunar horizon in the foreground.
  • The three astronauts were greeted as national heroes when they splashed down three days later in the Pacific Ocean and were feted as Time magazine's 'Men of the Year'.

Media Baron Ramoji Rao Passes Away

  • Prominent media baron Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, chairman of Ramoji Group and Padma Vibhushan awardee, passed away at the age of 87.
  • Born on November 16, 1936, Ramoji Rao established a massive business empire, including Margadarsi Chit Funds, Eenadu Telugu daily, ETV network of television channels, film production company Usha Kiran Movies and the world's largest film production facility – Ramoji Film City (RFC).
  • He also owns Dolphin group of hotels, Kalanjali Saree Showrooms, Priya Foods and Mayuri Film Distributors.
