Shreya Gupta Secures Sabre Bronze at Commonwealth Championship

Prominent ace fencer of Jammu and Kashmir, Shreya Gupta, has set the ball rolling in fencing by winning her first-ever individual medal at the international level by clinching the Sabre category bronze medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Junior and Cadet Championship 2024 in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Shreya, in a superb display of the game, completely outclassed Saunders Nicole of England in the table of 16 by a margin of 15-3, whereas in a medal bout, she secured a win over Hardge Gala of Australia by 15-13. In the semifinals, Shreya lost to Juliet Mind of Singapore in a tight finish by a score of 15-11.

Dr. MS Valiathan Passes Away

Dr. M. S. Valiathan, renowned cardiac surgeon and the founder-director of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), passed away in Manipal. He was 90.
His remarkable career as a cardiac surgeon and his significant contributions to laying the foundation for the nation's Indigenous medical technology development are written in golden letters throughout history.
He was instrumental in establishing SCTIMST as an institute of national importance in 1976. He headed the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery for twenty years from the inception of SCTIMST till May 1994.
One of the highlights of his long career at SCTIMST and a flagship enterprise of the Institute, was the Indigenous development of the first-ever mechanical heart valve prosthesis of the nation, the TTK-Chitra valve. Dr. Valiathan himself and his team implanted the first valve at SCTIMST in 1990.

Camlin Founder Subhash Dandekar Passes Away

Subhash Dandekar, the founder of stationery brand Camlin, died at the age of 86.
After selling the popular artwork brand to Japan's Kokuyo, Dandekar was serving as the chairman emeritus of Kokuyo Camlin.
Dandekar also served as the President of the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce and Industries from 1990 to 1992 and contributed towards the development of the industrial sector of the state.

Veteran Actor Smriti Biswas Dies

Veteran actress Smriti Biswas died at the age of 100. The actress was best known for her work in Bengali, Hindi, and Marathi films.
Biswas made her acting debut with the 1930 Bengali film Sandhya and appeared last in the 1960 movie Model Girl.
She worked in the films of Guru Dutt, V Shantaram, Mrinal Sen, Bimal Roy, BR Chopra, and Raj Kapoor. She also acted with Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar, Uttam Kumar, Balraj Sahni, and other notable artists in various films. Biswas retired from acting after marrying film director S. D. Narang in 1960.
