Lockheed Martin and Tata Systems Partner for C-130J Expansion in India

  • Lockheed Martin and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) announced a collaboration to enhance the C-130J Super Hercules program in India. This partnership aims to establish a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in India to support both the Indian Air Force's (IAF) fleet of 12 C-130Js and global C-130J fleets.
  • Additionally, the agreement includes plans to expand C-130J manufacturing and assembly in India, potentially for the IAF's Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program, pending necessary government approvals.
  • The collaboration marks a milestone for Tata Advanced Systems, entering the defence MRO sector for large aircraft. It strengthens the partnership between Lockheed Martin and TASL, building on their existing joint venture, Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Ltd. (TLMAL), which has been manufacturing C-130J empennages since 2010.

India Bolsters Naval Capabilities: Launch of Mahe Class Anti-Submarine Warfare Vessels

  • The Indian Navy launched two anti-submarine warfare (ASW) shallow water crafts, named Malpe and Mulki, at Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL) in Kochi. These vessels, part of the Eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft project, are the fourth and fifth ships to be launched under the program, which was initiated through a contract signed between the Indian Ministry of Defence and CSL on April 30, 2019.
  • The project is part of India's broader 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) initiative, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign defense imports.

Indian Army & IAF Sign MoU with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya to Boost Logistics Skills

  • The Indian Army and Indian Air Force signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya in Vadodara. This collaboration aims to enhance the logistics capabilities of personnel and align with national development plans such as the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan 2021 and the National Logistics Policy 2022. The agreement was formalised in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
  • The MoU will focus on developing higher expertise in logistics, enabling the Indian Army and Air Force to build in-house proficiency across various logistics operations. This initiative supports the national goal of self-reliance in defense and aims to improve the efficiency of logistics systems, which are crucial for rapid mobilisation and resource allocation.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the partnership as a monumental step toward strengthening the logistics backbone of the Armed Forces.

D. K. Sunil Appointed Chairman and Managing Director of HAL

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd announced the appointment of D. K. Sunil as the Chairman & Managing Director of the company. The appointment was based on a letter from the Ministry of Defence, Department of Defence Production, Government of India.
  • His term begin from the date of assumption of charge till April 30, 2026, the date of his superannuation or until further orders of Ministry of Defence.
  • Prior to taking over as Chairman & Managing Director, Sunil was holding the post of Director (Engineering and R&D) of the Company from September 29, 2022.
  • Sunil joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in 1987 as a Management Trainee, and has 37 years of experience in varied roles in the company contributing significantly to design, production, quality enhancement, and customer support issues.

Indo-US Joint Military Exercise Begins in Rajasthan

  • The 20th edition of India-USA Joint Military Exercise YUDH ABHYAS-2024 is being held at Foreign Training Node in Mahajan Field Firing Ranges, Rajasthan. The exercise is being held from September 9 to 22, 2024. Exercise YUDH ABHYAS has been held annually since 2004, alternating between India and the USA.
  • This edition marks a significant increase in the scope and complexity of the joint exercise in terms of troop strength and equipment. The Indian Army contingent comprising 600 personnel is represented by a battalion of the Rajput Regiment along with personnel from other arms and services. The US contingent comprising of similar strength is represented by the troops of 1-24 Battalion of the Alaska based 11th Airborne Division of the US Army.
  • The aim of the joint exercise is to enhance joint military capability of both sides to undertake counter terrorism operations in a sub conventional scenario under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise focuses on operations in the semi-desert environment.

Iraq, US Agree Phased Coalition Troop Pullout by September 2025

  • Iraq and the United States agreed on a phased pullout of the US-led anti-jihadist coalition but have yet to sign a final agreement, the Iraqi Defence Minister said.
  • The United States has some 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria as part of the international coalition against the Islamic State group.
  • They have been engaged in months of talks with Baghdad on a withdrawal of forces, but fell short of announcing any timeline so far.
  • Iraqi Defence Minister Thabet al-Abbassi said that the coalition would pull out from bases in Baghdad and other parts of federal Iraq by September 2025 and from the autonomous northern Kurdistan region by September 2026.

India Successfully Carries Out Launch of Agni-4 Ballistic Missile

  • India completed a successful test-fire of Agni-4 Ballistic Missile.
  • The launch of the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-4, was carried out from the Integrated Test Range in Odisha's Chandipur.
  • The launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters. It was conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, a part of India's Nuclear Command Authority (NCA).
  • The range increased even further with Agni-4, which can hit as far as 4,000 kilometres. The 20-metre-long missile can carry a payload of 1,000 kg and can be fired from a road-mobile launcher.
  • During its test launch in 2012, Agni-4 covered more than 3,000 km in 20 minutes. It was the longest-range mission flown by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at the time. The Agni-4 missile was earlier called Agni-2 Prime.

  • The 5th Defence Cooperation Dialogue between India and the Maldives was held in New Delhi. The Indian delegation was led by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, while the Maldivian delegation was headed by General Ibrahim Hilmy, Chief of Defence Force, Maldives National Defence Force. The meeting provided a platform to advance bilateral defence cooperation, focusing on the implementation of ongoing projects and fostering stability in the Indian Ocean region.
