India registered the highest percentage of failed dope tests among countries which tested more than 2000 samples, with South Africa being second in the 2022 Testing Figures Report released by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
India tested 3865 samples (urine and blood combined) during the recorded period, of which 125 returned adverse analytical findings. This amounts to 3.2 per cent of the samples. In terms of number of samples tested, India was 11th on the list but the number of doping violations were higher than major sporting nations.
Bindyarani Devi Wins Bronze, at IWF World Cup
The IWF World Cup 2024 concluded in Phuket, Thailand in April 2024. The event was organised by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the world governing body for men's and women's weightlifting.
Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi competed in the women's 55kg category and won a bronze medal. She lifted a total of 196kg, including 83kg in the snatch and 113kg in the clean and jerk. This was lower than her silver-medal-winning performance of 203kg at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
North Korea's Kang Hyon Gyong won the gold medal with a lift of 234kg, while Romania's Mihaela Cambei took the silver.

Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Monte Carlo Masters
Former world number one Rafael Nadal withdrew from the upcoming Monte Carlo Masters, commencing on April 7, citing that his body is not up to it at the moment. The ATP Masters 1000 event is the first one on clay this season, with the focus later firmly on the French Open 2024, i.e. the second Grand Slam event of the year. Nadal's participation at the Roland Garros is also under serious threat as the tournament is now less than two months away.
Tennis: WTA Finals to be Held in Saudi Arabia Starting 2024
Women's tennis saw a landmark decision made by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). The WTA in a historic announcement said that it moved the year-end finals to Saudi Arabia. The Arab nation, emerging as a major sporting nation in recent years will host the WTA finals starting from 2024 until 2026. The move will see the top eight women tennis stars compete at the year-end event in both singles and doubles tournament.
Saudi Arabia, which for years was averse to women's sports and had a strict dress code in place will now host Women's Tennis Association (WTA) finals. The 2024 finals to be held from November 2-9 has moved to the Arab nation from last year's host Cancun in Mexico.

Chess: India has a New No. 1 as Arjun Erigaisi Climbs to No. 9 in the World
In the latest FIDE rankings released by the world governing body of chess, India has a new number 1 chess player – Arjun Erigaisi. With a standard rating of 2756, Erigaisi is ranked ninth in the world. This is his debut in the top 10 of the Open standard list.
Following Erigaisi is the five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, who is the second-ranked Indian on the FIDE list. Erigaisi collected eight points in the 5th Shengzhen Chess Masters and Bundesliga, which propelled him to the ninth position on the list.
The former world champion Magnus Carlsen still tops the charts with a rating of 2830.
Following Carlsen are two Americans: Fabiano Caruana (rating of 2803) and Hikaru Nakamura (rating of 2789). Both Caruana and Nakamura are the favorites to win the Candidates tournament, which will earn them the right to take on the world champion Ding Liren.

Maharashtra Teams Reign in National Kho Kho Championship
Maharashtra emerged champion in both the men's and women's sections in the 56th National Kho Kho championship 2023-2024 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Delhi.
In the men's final, the Maharashtra team defeated the Indian Railway team by a narrow margin of 52-50 points.
Maharashtra vs Airport Authority of India In the women's category, the Maharashtra team, led by Sampada Maurya, outshone the Airport Authority of India team with a score of 18-16 points and claimed the championship.
The Maharashtra men's team defeated Kolhapur 30-28 in the semi-finals, while Indian Railways overcame Odisha 24-22. In the women's semi-finals, Maharashtra beat Odisha 24-20, and the Airport Authority of India defeated Delhi 32-10. The winning teams received a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakh and a trophy, while the runners-up received Rs. 2 lakh and a trophy.
The 56th National Kho Kho Championship 2023-24 was organized by the Kho Kho Federation of India concluded in April 2024. A total of 37 teams participated in both the men's and women's categories, divided into 8 groups each.
Sumit Nagal Wins Opening Round at Marrakesh Open
Top Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal made a promising start at Marrakesh Open, entering the second round with a thrilling win over Corentin Moutet of France at the ATP 250 event in Morocco. Nagal, currently ranked 95, rallied his way and beat Moutet 4-6 6-3 6-2 in the opening round of the Grand Prix Hassan II event.
Nagal had lost to the same opponent in a Challenger final in Helsinki in 2023.

Mirabai Chanu Becomes the Only Indian Weightlifter to Qualify For Paris Olympics
Tokyo Olympics medallist Mirabai Chanu became the only Indian weightlifter to qualify for the Paris Olympics this year after competing successfully at the IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand. The Olympic silver medalist finished third in Group B of the women's 49 kg (and 11th overall) at the event and booked her berth at the 2024 Paris Games.
Chanu, who was back in action after a six-month-long injury lay-off, lifted a total of 184 kg at the World Cup, which is the final and a compulsory qualifier for Paris 2024.
