COP28 Summit in Dubai Makes Breakthrough over Renewable Fuels
Leaders from nearly 120 nations vowed to triple the world's renewable energy capacity within the next seven years at COP28 summit in Dubai. The development emerged as a collective push to shift away from fossil fuels and advance towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 despite the fact that major oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iran, and China, opted not to join the initiative.
These pledges are voluntary and non-binding. But their focus centres on an ambitious deployment of solar, wind, hydroelectric, and other renewable sources.
President Sultan Al Jaber, leading COP28, expressed the need for broader participation, particularly from key stakeholders. Notably, more than half of all nations signed up to triple global renewable capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030.

Virgin Atlantic Flies World's 1st 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel Flight from London to US
A Virgin Atlantic's Boeing 787s made the world's first 100 per cent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) flight from London's Heathrow to New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport.
UK's Transport Secretary travelled on the flight alongside Virgin Atlantic's Chief Executive Shai Weiss and Virgin's founder, Sir Richard Branson, making the carrier the first commercial airline to fly across the pond without the use of any fossil-based jet fuel.
According to the UK government, the flight marked a major milestone towards making air travel more environment-friendly as the world moves towards its goal of net zero by 2050.
The historic trip was powered by fuel made from waste fats that cannot enter the food chain. Repurposing waste products into jet fuel to cut emissions provides the most immediate solution to help decarbonise skies.

Iceberg A23a on the Move after 30 Years
One of the world's biggest iceberg is on the move after more than 30 years being stuck to the ocean floor.
The iceberg, called A23a, split from the Antarctic coastline in 1986. But it swiftly grounded in the Weddell Sea, becoming, essentially, an ice island.
At almost 4,000 sq km (1,500 sq miles) in area, it's more than twice the size of Greater London.
The past year has seen it drifting at speed, and the berg is now about to spill beyond Antarctic waters.
