India's Leopard Population Rises to 13,874

  • India's estimated leopard population rose from 12,852 in 2018 to 13,874 in 2022, but the number of rosetted felines declined slightly in the Shivalik Hills and the Indo-Gangetic Plains, the Union Environment Ministry said.
  • According to the 'Status of Leopards in India' report, launched by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, Madhya Pradesh has the maximum number of leopards in the country at 3,907 (up from 3,421 in 2018).
  • The number of felines grew from 1,690 in 2018 to 1,985 in 2022 in Maharashtra, from 1,783 to 1,879 in Karnataka, and from 868 to 1,070 in Tamil Nadu.

India Unveils Largest Solar-Battery Project, Pioneering Renewable Energy Innovation

  • The Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI), under the aegis of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, successfully commissioned India's largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which stores energy using solar energy. The 40 megawatts (MW) / 120MWh BESS with a solar photovoltaic (PV) plant which has an installed capacity of 152.325 megawatt hour (MWh) and dispatchable capacity of 100MW AC (155.02 MW peak DC) is located in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. The energy would be purchased by the state of Chhattisgarh, thus contributing to meeting the peak energy demand of the state using green electrons and also towards its renewable purchase obligations.
  • The project was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing.
  • The project has been constructed with funding from the World Bank and Clean Technology Fundunder Innovation in Solar Power & Hybrid Technologies Projectas well as leveraged financing from domestic lending agencies.

NTPC to Set up India's Largest Green Hydrogen Production Facility in Andhra Pradesh

  • Power sector PSU and India's largest integrated power company NTPC Limited signed a land lease agreement with Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) for setting up 'Integrated Green Hydrogen Hub', India's largest green hydrogen production facility near Visakhapatnam.
  • The hub will come up on 1,200 acres of land near Pudimadaka village of Atchutapuram mandal in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub aims to create a world-class ecosystem for technologies in the new energy paradigm, such as electrolyser and fuel cell manufacturing, related ancillary industries, and start-up, incubation, testing facilities, production and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives such as green ammonia and green methanol.

Uttar Pradesh to Set up First Turtle Conservation Reserve

  • The Forest Department in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district, in collaboration with the Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation India, is initiating a conservation effort. This endeavour aims to establish a turtle conservation reserve along the Sarju River, a tributary of the Ghaghra river. Gonda district is known for its turtle diversity, making it an ideal location for such a conservation effort.
  • Shailendra Singh, the Director of the Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation India, highlighted the biodiversity of the Sarju River. Notably, Sarju is home to nine turtle species, with eight of them listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act.

CleanMax and Bangalore International Airport Forge Long-Term Partnership for Renewable Power

  • Renewable power solutions provider CleanMax and Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru signed a 25-year long-term power purchase agreement aimed at fostering sustainable energy practices. The agreement entails the generation and supply of renewable energy sourced from a Solar-wind Captive Power Project, marking a pivotal step towards green energy adoption in the region.
  • The renewable energy initiative will draw power from a 45.9 MW Solar-wind Captive Power Project established under a special purpose vehicle named Clean Max BIAL Renewable Energy Private Limited.
  • Situated in Jagaluru, Karnataka, the project encompasses a 36 MW solar power plant and a 9.9 MW wind power plant.
  • This amalgamation of solar and wind technologies underscores the project's commitment to harnessing multiple renewable energy sources efficiently.
