Global Temperature Likely to Breach 1.5°C in Next Five Years

  • The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has raised a serious warning about climate change. According to a recent report, there is a 70% chance that global temperatures will cross the 1.5°C limit above pre-industrial levels between the years 2025 and 2029.
  • The WMO's report titled "Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update (2025-2029)," says that the Earth's average temperature between 2025 and 2029 could be between 1.2°C and 1.9°C above pre-industrial levels.
  • This prediction is based on current climate trends.
  • Also, there is an 80% chance that at least one of the next five years will break the record set in 2024, which was already the hottest year ever recorded.

  • Hyderabad teenager Vishwanath Karthikey Padakanti has become the youngest Indian and the second youngest person in the world to complete the legendary 7 Summits challenge – scaling the highest peak on each continent, a feat that ranks among the most prestigious in global mountaineering.
  • Considered the toughest of mountaineering expeditions, Vishwanath scaled Mount Everest, the final frontier, to complete the remarkable achievement aged 16 years, six months and 27 days.
  • Vishwanath had scaled Aconcagua (highest peak in South America), Denali (North America), Mount Elbrus (Europe), Kilimanjaro (Africa) and Mount Kosciuszko (Australia) earlier.

Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano Erupts Again

  • The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island released lava fountains reaching over 1,000 feet into the air recently.
  • Kilauea Volcano is one of the world's most active volcanoes.
  • It is a shield-type volcano located in the southeastern part of the island of Hawaii, Hawaii state, United States.
  • Eruption lasted approximately six hours in two of Halemaumau's vents with the south vent stopping at 10:25 p.m. local time and the north vent ending at 9:48 p.m.

Anil Kumble Appointed Karnataka Forest Department Ambassador

  • In a significant move toward enhancing environmental awareness and conservation efforts, the Karnataka government has appointed former Indian cricket team captain Anil Kumble as the ambassador of the State Forest Department and for wildlife conservation. 
  • Known not only for his achievements in cricket but also for his past involvement in conservation efforts, Kumble's appointment is expected to boost public engagement in preserving the state's rich biodiversity.
  • The announcement also comes amid major forest reclamation efforts and green space development initiatives in Bengaluru.

Meghalaya's New Cave-dwelling Fish Adapts to Streams Overground

  • A team of zoologists, led by Kangkan Sarma of Gauhati University's Department of Zoology, has recorded Schistura densiclava as a new species of troglophile loach from Krem Mawjymbuin in the State's East Khasi Hills district.
  • A troglophile animal is essentially a cave-dwelling animal that can thrive and reproduce in epigean, or aboveground, environments. Krem means cave in the indigenous Khasi language.

  • National Institute of Naturopathy (NIN), Pune, hosted a unique celebration combining Vat Amavasya with the Ministry of Ayush's Harit Yoga initiative, as part of the lead-up to the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY). 
  • The event underscored the symbolic and ecological importance of the Banyan tree (Vat Vriksh) while promoting yoga's role in ecological harmony.
  • It highlighted the Ministry of Ayush's proactive role in promoting ecological mindfulness through yoga in the run-up to IDY 2025, themed "Yoga for One Earth, One Health".

National Pride: Joint Indian Mountaineering Team Scales Mount Everest

  • In a historic feat, a Joint National Mountaineering Team from India comprising instructors from the country's premier mountaineering institutes — Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS), Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) — successfully scaled Mount Everest (8,848.86m) on May 23, 2025.
  • The expedition showcases India's growing leadership in high-altitude mountaineering and the spirit of adventure, unity, and resilience.
  • The effort was supported by the Ministry of Defence and flagged off by Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth on March 26, 2025.
  • The successful mission highlights the strategic and symbolic value of mountaineering as a form of national achievement and institutional synergy.
