Education Ministry Announces Guidelines for Bagless Days for Classes 6 to 8 Students
The Union Ministry of Education announced the guidelines for the implementation of bagless days for classes 6 to 8 and making learning in schools more joyful, experiential and stress-free.
The guidelines, developed by PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education, a unit of the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), were released on the fourth anniversary of the new National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.
The NEP, 2020, had recommended that all students in classes 6-8 participate in a 10-day bagless period.
"Ten bagless days activities can be accommodated in any number of slots in an annual calendar. But it is advisable to keep two or three slots. While developing an annual work plan, all subject teachers may be involved. If necessary, indoor and outdoor activities may be clubbed in a day," the guidelines stated.
NIEPID Launches Mobile Therapy Buses to Help Children with Disabilities in Rural Areas
The Hans Foundation, in collaboration with the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID), launched the Mobile Therapy Buses initiative to provide life-changing services to children with disabilities living in remote, marginalised communities.
The initiative aims to address the unique needs of children with disabilities in rural areas by bringing them to their homes through the deployment of five mobile therapy buses. The buses are designed to provide intensive and life-changing services, including diagnostic, therapeutic, and skill development support to nearly 14,000 people with disabilities.
Indian Students Win Big at International Physics, Chemistry Olympiads
Indian students secured two gold and three silver medals at the 54th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2024 held between July 21 and July 29 in Isfahan, Iran. In the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO2024), held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from July 21 to 30, the Indian team bagged one gold one bronze and two silver medals.
In the Physics Olympiad, overall, India was placed in the fourth position, jointly with Vietnam. China bagged the top spot, followed by Russia and Romania in second and third positions, respectively. This time, a total of 193 students from 43 countries participated in the International Physics Olympiad. In all, 18 gold, 35 silver and 53 bronze medals were awarded.
In the International Chemistry Olympiad 2024, all members of the team of four managed to secure one medal each.

Fourth Anniversary of NEP 2020 Celebrated at Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam 2024
The Ministry of Education celebrated the 4th anniversary of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 at the Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam (ABSS) 2024, held at the Manekshaw Centre Auditorium in New Delhi. The event, attended by key ministers, officials, academicians, and students, featured the release of books and lecture notes by the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) Division. The celebration also included the launch of several significant initiatives and a series of thematic sessions on various NEP 2020-related topics.
The books released are: 'Kautilya's Arthashastra: Timeless Strategies for Modern Governance' by Vinayak Rajat Bhat and Tejusvi Shukla, 'Marma Kannadi: Decoding the Human Body the Siddha Way' by Gurukkal Dr. S. Mahesh and 'Shodha Vijaya', a collection of research articles on southern dynasties, focusing on the Vijayanagara Karnata Kingdom, edited by Dr. Manorama B. N.
Nanigopal Mahanta New Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University
The Gauhati University, Assam appointed Nanigopal Mahanta as the 18th vice chancellor of the University. The announcement was made by Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu. The Vice Chancellor was serving as the political science professor at the varsity.
Nanigopal Mahanta earlier served as the education adviser to the Assam government. Along with it, the education minister also appointed new Vice Chancellors of Bhattadeva University and Rabindranath Tagore University.
Professor Dhanpati Deka took charge as the Vice Chancellor of Bhattadeva University, while Professor Manabendra Dutta Choudhury was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Rabindranath Tagore University.

IGNOU Announces Professor Uma Kanjilal as New Acting Vice Chancellor
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) appointed Professor Uma Kanjilal as its acting Vice Chancellor, following the completion of Professor Nageshwar Rao's term. Prior to this role, Professor Kanjilal served as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university.
Professor Kanjilal's career began in 1984 as a research assistant at IIT Kanpur. She later held positions at IGNCA as a cataloguer and professional assistant. Her tenure at IGNOU saw her rise from lecturer to professor, a role she has fulfilled since 2003.
