CBSE Drops Division and Distinction Accolades for Class 10, 12 Students

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced major changes to its assessment methodology for Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations. Effective immediately, CBSE will no longer award divisions or distinctions to students, focusing instead on individual subject performance.
The decision was communicated through an official release by CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, marking a departure from the traditional grading system.

NITI Aayog for Extending Schooling to 18 Years

NITI Aayog member V. K. Paul emphasised the need to extend the years of schooling in India from the current 13 years to 18 years.
Addressing the seventh edition of the National School Education Summit organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Paul, who is the former head of paediatrics department at AIIMS, highlighted the potential impact of adding even one more year to schooling.

Assam Announces 5% Quota for State-Run School Students in Engineering Colleges

In a bid to promote more enrolment in state-run schools, the Assam government decided to reserve 5 per cent seats in engineering colleges for students who have studied in government schools from class 7 to 12, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. He made the announcement after the state Cabinet meeting in Tinsukia, where he also shared other important decisions taken by his government.

Kerala Governor Khan Names Prof. Bijoy Nandan as New Kannur University Vice-Chancellor

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan decided to appoint Prof. S. Bijoy Nandan as the Vice-Chancellor of Kannur University, following the Supreme Court's annulment of the reappointment of Gopinath Ravindran to the key position.
Nandan is currently serving as a professor in the Department of Marine Biology at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT).
The Governor is the Chancellor of the university.
The Supreme Court had nullified the reappointment of Gopinath Ravindran as the Vice-Chancellor of Kannur University.

IIT Guwahati Launches Programme on Drone Technology for Armed Forces

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati started a three-month training programme on Drone Technology for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks Officers (OR). The primary objective of this programme is to modernise the armed forces operations, provide skills for drone operations and utilities and facilitate a smooth transition for the armed forces as they consider post-retirement career options in the rapidly expanding drone technology sector.
The programme is designed to equip participants with knowledge, perception and vision necessary for them to succeed professionally in the diverse drone industry or as technology entrepreneurs.
The programme on drone technology will be implemented by the Centre for Educational Technology (CET), Centre for Intelligent Cyber Physical Systems (CICPS), Centre for Drone Technology and IIT Guwahati Technology Innovation and Development Foundation (IITG TIDF).

Odisha Government Signs MoU for Establishment of NMIMS University

The Odisha government and SVKM trust signed a Rs. 300 crore MoU to establish NMIMS University in Bhubaneswar with an aim to enhance higher education, signalling a significant stride towards educational development in the state.
The formalisation of the MoU took place in a ceremony held at the Lok Seva Bhawan. It was attended by Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, the Minister of Higher Education, along with other guests.

IGNOU Launches Channel-based Counselling in Manipuri Language

IGNOU launched a channel-based counselling initiative titled 'Swayam Prabha' in the Manipuri language. The program, organised by IGNOU in Imphal, was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Education Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh who was the chief guest.
The event was attended by more than 700 students, educationists, media persons, and the general public.
As per reports, the newly developed studios of IGNOU in Regional Centre Imphal for live transmission of Swayam Prabha transmission were also inaugurated.
The initiative is aimed at opening up doors of education for aspirants living in far-flung areas where conventional educational facilities are limited and people prefer to be taught in their own mother tongue.

Supreme Court quashed re-appointment of Gopinath Raveendran as Vice Chancellor of Kannur University
The Supreme Court quashed the re-appointment of Dr. Gopinath Raveendran as the Vice Chancellor of Kannur University on the grounds that the appointment was vitiated by undue interference from the Government of Kerala.
The Bench of Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud, Justice J. B. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra observed that though the notification of appointment was issued by the Chancellor in November 2021, the same was vitiated by 'unwarranted interference' by the state government.

Bharat Biotech, University of Sydney ink MoU for Vaccine Research

In a significant step towards advancing vaccine research initiatives and strengthening global efforts to combat infectious diseases, Bharat Biotech International, a leading vaccine manufacturer and the University of Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute (SydneyID) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration aims to foster academic-industry partnerships, design novel methodologies for tackling future epidemics and leverage the strengths of both entities to advance the science of vaccines and biotherapeutics.
The agreement underscores the commitment of Bharat Biotech and the University of Sydney to building strong sectoral and cross-organisational collaborations. By pooling their resources and expertise, the two entities seek to develop innovative approaches to address infectious diseases and epidemics. The collaboration also aims to create a framework for sustained cooperation in the field of vaccine research.
