ITBP to Get Russian KAMAZ Typhoon Vehicle for LAC

  • The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has successfully conducted a demonstration and trial of the formidable Typhoon vehicle at its Transport Battalion in Chandigarh. The event, attended by officials from Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, marks an important step in upgrading the force's vehicles.
  • Kamaz-53949 Typhoon-K is a Russian-made 4×4 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle. It was developed by Remdiesel, a subsidiary of Kamaz. It was developed for the safe transportation of troops and military cargo in areas with a high risk of mines. It can also be configured as a command post vehicle, ambulance, and logistics support vehicle.

Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera Assumes Charge as Assam Rifles Director General

  • A significant change in leadership took place as Lt. General Vikas Lakhera assumed charge as the new Director General of the Assam Rifles, an organization fondly known as the "Sentinels of the Northeast". This transition marks a new era for the paramilitary force that has long been crucial to maintaining peace and security in India's northeastern region.
  • Lt. Gen. Lakhera's journey in the Indian Armed Forces began on June 9, 1990, when he was commissioned into the 4 Sikh Light Infantry. This initial posting laid the foundation for a career marked by dedication, valor, and strategic acumen.

Air Force Approves Production of 200 Astra Missiles

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) gave clearance to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to produce 200 Astra air-to-air missiles for its Su-3O and LCA Tejas fighter aircraft.
  • The clearance was given to the DRDO and public sector firm BDL, during a visit by Indian Air Force Deputy Chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit to Hyderabad.
  • While DRDO is the development agency for the project, BDL is the production agency for it.

US Hands over its Last Military Base in Niger to the Ruling Junta

  • The US handed over its last military base in Niger, one of two crucial hubs for American counterterrorism operations in the country, to local authorities, the US Department of Defense and Niger's Ministry of Defense announced in a joint statement.
  • The handing over of Airbase 201 in the city of Agadez came after the U.S. troops withdrew earlier this month from Airbase 101, a small drone base in Niger's capital of Niamey.
  • US troops have until September 15 to leave the Sahel country following an agreement with Nigerien authorities.

DG SSB Daljit Singh Chawdhary Takes Over Additional Charge of Director General, BSF

  • Daljit Singh Chawdhary, the Director General of Sahastra Seema Bal (SSB), took over the additional charge of Director General Border Security Force.
  • Daljit Singh Chawdhary is a 1990 batch officer of the Indian Police Service, Uttar Pradesh cadre. He assumed the charge of DG SSB on January 23, 2024. In his 34 years of service, he has served in different capacities in Uttar Pradesh and also has the privilege of serving on Central Deputation since 2017, as ADG in Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and as SDG in Central Reserve Police Force.

INS Tabar Completes MPX with Russian Ship Soobrazitelny

  • Indian Navy's frontline frigate, INS Tabar, was in St. Petersburg, Russia, and participated in the 328th Russian Navy Day Parade celebrations. This visit aimed to strengthen the longstanding maritime cooperation and friendship between India and Russia.
  • INS Tabar successfully conducted a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with the Russian Navy's ship Soobrazitelny. The exercise included a series of complex naval maneuvers such as communication drills, search and rescue tactics, and replenishment at sea operations.
  • The participation of INS Tabar in both the Navy Day Parade and the MPX highlights a significant milestone in the maritime relationship between India and Russia. It underscores the commitment of both nations to maintaining peace, stability, and security in the region.

'Tarang Shakti', Largest Multilateral Air Exercise in India, to be Held in 2 Phases in Aug-Sept

  • Air forces from the US, Germany, France and several other countries will take part in 'Tarang Shakti', the largest multilateral air exercise in India that will showcase the country's defence prowess and provide a platform to participating forces to foster interoperability.
  • First phase of 'Tarang Shakti' will be held at Sulur in Tamil Nadu from August 6-14, and the second phase from August 29-September 14 at Rajasthan's Jodhpur.
  • Russia and Israel will not be participating in the exercise. These two countries are India's defence partners.
  • Fifty-one countries were invited to take part in the exercise and nearly 30 of them will be taking part in it.
  • The first part will be conducted in Sulur area in south India, and this phase will see four countries , Germany, France, Spain and the UK, with their assets.
  • Phase two will be held at Jodhpur and that will see participation from Australia, Bangladesh, Greece, Singapore, the UAE and the US with their assets. Along with that there will be 18 countries which will be sending observers and not their air assets.
