IIT-Madras to Host Annual Tech Festival Shastra from January 3 to 7

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT M) will host the 26th edition of Shaastra, a student-run Tech Festival, from January 3 to 7. Entirely managed by students, this event has over 750 students of IIT Madras working in various organisational roles.
  • This event is ISO 9001:2015-certified. It will feature a line-up of 80 events, 130 stalls, and an expected footfall of over 70,000 across five days. IIT Madras' Shaastra will celebrate science and technology through competitions, summits, lectures, exhibitions, and workshops.

IIT-Delhi Launches Executive Programme in Virtual and Augmented Reality

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi unveiled a six-month executive programme in virtual and augmented reality as part of its Continuing Education Programme (CEP). Designed for professionals, this blended learning course focusses on equipping participants with practical skills and expertise to foster innovation in the rapidly evolving AR and VR domains.

Tamil Nadu to Retain No-detention Policy for Students up to Class 8

  • Tamil Nadu will continue its 'no-detention policy' for students up to Class 8, as confirmed by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi.
  • Criticising the Centre's decision to permit schools to detain students in Class 5 or 8 if they fail to pass exams, he called the move a significant obstacle for children from economically disadvantaged families, hindering their uninterrupted education up to Class 8.
  • Tamil Nadu school Education Minister clarified that Tamil Nadu does not implement the National Education Policy, and the Centre's decision will not impact schools in the state, except those under the jurisdiction of the Union government.

Government Schools can Now Fail Classes 5, 8 Students as 'No-detention Policy' Ends

  • The central government made a major change in education policy, ending the 'no-detention policy' for fifth and eighth graders. This means that students in these classes who fail their year-end exams can now be held back and must repeat the grade.
  • Failed students will have a chance to retake the test within two months, but if they fail again, they will not be promoted. The school will not expel a student until the 8th grade. Central Government has taken this decision intending to improve the learning outcome among children.
  • This new rule applies to over 3,000 central government-run schools, including Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and Sainik Schools, as per senior education ministry officials. The decision, announced through an official notification, reverses the 2019 amendment to the Right to Education Act.

Kejriwal Launches Dr Ambedkar Scholarship for Dalit Students Abroad

  • Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal launched a new scholarship programme aimed at Dalit students in Delhi. The scheme, named the Dr Ambedkar Samman Scholarship, will cover all expenses for Dalit students wishing to pursue higher education abroad.
  • Kejriwal emphasised that the Delhi government would bear the entire cost of tuition, travel, and accommodation for those Dalit students who are accepted into foreign universities.

IIT Madras Opens Research Hub for Advanced AMOLED Technology

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) launched the AMOLED Research Centre (ARC), a National Centre of Excellence, to develop next-generation AMOLED displays for digital devices such as smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. The Centre is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and Tata Sons.
  • The new facility aims to advance India's display manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependency on imports. Researchers at the ARC will work on innovative techniques to create cost-effective AMOLED displays, focusing on small-sized screens for consumer devices.
