Earth Day

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 every year. The day is also known as International Mother Earth Day. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about various issues that threaten the environment and endanger the planet, such as the rapidly rising levels of pollution, deforestation, and global warming. Countries and organisations from all around the world unite to promote awareness of the critical need to preserve the environment.
The origin of Earth Day can be traced back to 1970. The idea behind the event originated from Gaylord Nelson, a US senator, and Denis Hayes, a Harvard student. They were both deeply disturbed by the deteriorating environment in the United States and the massive January 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Deeply disturbed by the environmental impacts, he wanted to infuse the energy of student protests into an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution. He recruited Denis Hayes, a young activist, to manage the campus teach-ins and to scale the idea of environment conservation to a broader public. They choose April 22, a weekday between Spring Break and Final Exams, to increase student participation. Its immediate success was evident with a massive turnout of 20 million people across the US.
The theme for Earth Say 2024 is 'Planet vs. Plastics', which aims to increase public awareness of the detrimental effects that plastic pollution has on both human and environmental health.

National Civil Service Day

National Civil Services Day in India is celebrated on April 21.
In 1947 on April 21 Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Home Minister of independent India addressed the Probationary Officers at the all-Indian Administrative Service Training School at Metcalfe House in New Delhi. Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel delivered a powerful speech and empowered the civil servants to adopt the role of national service leaving behind the experience. In his speech, he referred to civil servants as the "Steel frame of India". The first such function was held in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on April 21, 2006. So, since 2006 it has been celebrated as National Civil Service Day on the 21^st of April.
The theme for National Civil Services Day 2024 is 'Empowering Citizens, Enhancing Governance'. This theme emphasises citizen-centered governance and the responsibility of civil servants to empower citizens through transparent, accountable, and responsive administration.

World Liver Day

World Liver Day is observed on April 19 every year to raise awareness about liver-related diseases and why we should prioritise its health. This day aims to spread information about liver diseases, prevention, early diagnosis and treatment.
The first ever world Liver Day was launched by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in 2010. It is celebrated annually on April 19, to commemorate the founding of EASL on April 19, 1966.
The theme of World Liver Day 2024 is 'Be Vigilant, Get Regular Liver Check-Ups and Prevent Fatty Liver Diseases.'

National Exercise Day

National Exercise Day is observed on April 18 every year. This day is dedicated to encouraging everyone to participate in physical activity and exercise. It is a day to start a new habit and build a strong foundation for lifelong health.
The roots of exercise stretch far back to ancient Greece, where yoga emerged as one of the earliest organised forms of physical activity, emphasising both mental and spiritual well-being. Over time, yoga diversified into practices like Hatha yoga, prioritising physical health. Similarly, in the early Middle Ages, Germanic tribes in Northern Europe utilised exercise as a survival tool.

World Heritage Day

World Heritage Day, also known as International Day for Monuments and Sites (IDMS), is celebrated annually on April 18 to honour and preserve our heritage.
The day was first established in 1982 by the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and was later adopted by UNESCO during its 22nd General Conference.
The theme for World Heritage Day 2024 is 'Discover and Experience Diversity.'

World Hemophilia Day

World Hemophilia Day is celebrated every year on April 17 to educate people about rare bleeding disorders and support those who live with this condition.
The foundation of the day was laid in 1989 by the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH). April 17 was decided as the date to observe the health day every year to honour the founder of the organisation Frank Schnabel, who played a significant role in advocating for hemophilia awareness and treatment and dedicated his life towards improving lives of those suffering from the disorder.
The theme for World Hemophilia Day is 'Equitable access for all: recognising all bleeding disorders'.
