IIT-Delhi Launches Executive Programme in Virtual and Augmented Reality

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi unveiled a six-month executive programme in virtual and augmented reality as part of its Continuing Education Programme (CEP). Designed for professionals, this blended learning course focusses on equipping participants with practical skills and expertise to foster innovation in the rapidly evolving AR and VR domains.
The programme covers a wide range of topics, from foundational concepts to advanced techniques in creating immersive experiences. Participants will learn essential skills such as animation design and the development of interactive AR and VR environments. A one-day campus immersion experience is also included as part of the course.

Tamil Nadu to Retain No-detention Policy for Students up to Class 8

Tamil Nadu will continue its 'no-detention policy' for students up to Class 8, as confirmed by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi.
Criticising the Centre's decision to permit schools to detain students in Class 5 or 8 if they fail to pass exams, he called the move a significant obstacle for children from economically disadvantaged families, hindering their uninterrupted education up to Class 8.
Tamil Nadu school Education Minister clarified that Tamil Nadu does not implement the National Education Policy, and the Centre's decision will not impact schools in the state, except those under the jurisdiction of the Union government.

Government Schools can Now Fail Classes 5, 8 Students as 'No-detention Policy' Ends

The central government made a major change in education policy, ending the 'no-detention policy' for fifth and eighth graders. This means that students in these classes who fail their year-end exams can now be held back and must repeat the grade.
Failed students will have a chance to retake the test within two months, but if they fail again, they will not be promoted. The school will not expel a student until the 8th grade. Central Government has taken this decision intending to improve the learning outcome among children.
This new rule applies to over 3,000 central government-run schools, including Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and Sainik Schools, as per senior education ministry officials. The decision, announced through an official notification, reverses the 2019 amendment to the Right to Education Act.

Kejriwal Launches Dr Ambedkar Scholarship for Dalit Students Abroad

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal launched a new scholarship programme aimed at Dalit students in Delhi. The scheme, named the Dr Ambedkar Samman Scholarship, will cover all expenses for Dalit students wishing to pursue higher education abroad.
Kejriwal emphasised that the Delhi government would bear the entire cost of tuition, travel, and accommodation for those Dalit students who are accepted into foreign universities.

IIT Madras Opens Research Hub for Advanced AMOLED Technology

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) launched the AMOLED Research Centre (ARC), a National Centre of Excellence, to develop next-generation AMOLED displays for digital devices such as smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. The Centre is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and Tata Sons.
The new facility aims to advance India's display manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependency on imports. Researchers at the ARC will work on innovative techniques to create cost-effective AMOLED displays, focusing on small-sized screens for consumer devices.

Jammu University Secures A++ Grade in NAAC

University of Jammu achieved a milestone by securing the coveted A++ grade in the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation, attaining an impressive cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.72 on a four-point scale.
"This recognition by NAAC is not just a milestone but a motivation to further our commitment to quality, innovation, inclusivity, and societal impact," Rai added, emphasising that this achievement marks the beginning of new aspirations for the university to set higher benchmarks in higher education.

CBSE Hosts National Adolescent Summit to Discuss Student Well-being

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) successfully hosted the National Adolescent Summit 2024 at the National Bal Bhawan, New Delhi. Under the theme "Life Skills, Mental Health, Safety, and Well-being," the two-day event attracted over 850 participants from across India and beyond, focusing on critical issues facing adolescents. In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the summit aimed to empower students and educators while promoting holistic development.
The event was inaugurated by Rahul Singh, CBSE Chairman, who highlighted the transformative nature of adolescence and the importance of an education that extends beyond the traditional curriculum. He encouraged students to engage actively in the summit's activities, allowing their talents and voices to shine.

IIT Madras Hosts ICIIS 2024 with Workshops on Quantum Computing and 5G/6G Tech

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and IEEE are jointly hosting the 18th International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS 2024) from December 21 to December 23, 2024, at the IIT Madras campus. A key feature of the conference is a workshop on 'Programming with Quantum Computers' and '5G/6G Wireless Networks'.
The workshop is being conducted in a hybrid format, allowing participants to join either online or in person at IIT Madras.

IIT Bombay and Tohoku University Collaborate on Research

IIT Bombay signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tohoku University, Japan, to launch the IIT Bombay-Tohoku University Joint Academic & Research Programme. The initiative aims to introduce collaborative Master's and PhD programmes, offering students dual mentorship, access to state-of-the-art resources, and exposure to the academic systems of both institutions.
Initially, the programme will focus on a dual degree initiative for research. Over time, it may develop into a joint institute, subject to approval from the senate and government bodies. The collaboration aims to address global challenges through academic and research excellence.
The signing ceremony witnessed participation from senior delegations of both universities. The MoU was exchanged by Dr Sharad Kumar Saraf, Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIT Bombay, and Professor Shireesh B Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, with Professor Teiji Tominaga, President of Tohoku University.
