National Law University Tripura Joins Forces with Rural Development Department to Empower Panchayats
In a commendable stride towards strengthening rural governance, National Law University (NLU) Tripura signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Development (Panchayat) Department of the State government of Tripura.
The collaboration was made with the objective to boost legal research, training and resource support for the Panchayati Raj Institutions across the state. The MoU, signed by Prof. Yogesh Pratap Singh, Vice-Chancellor of NLU Tripura, and Sandeep R. Rathod, IAS, Secretary of Rural Development and Panchayats is hopeful of building a cadre of panchayat resource persons across panchayats and blocks of Tripura.
It has been described as a 'turning point' in the academic and research trajectory of NLU Tripura by Ashutosh Pandey, Director of the Tripura Judicial Academy.

President Sanctions Constitution of 23rd Law Commission
President Droupadi Murmu sanctioned the constitution of the 23rd Law Commission of India, which serves from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2027.
According to the notification, the commission will comprise a full-time Chairperson, four members, and additional ex-officio and part-time members.
The commission's role is to review and recommend legal reforms to improve the Indian legal system.
In independent India, the first Law Commission was established in 1955 with its chairman being the then Attorney General M. C. Setalvad.

President Unveils New Flag & Insignia of Supreme Court to Mark Its 75th Year
The President of India Droupadi Murmu unveiled the new flag and insignia of the Supreme Court of India to commemorate its 75th year.
The new flag and the insignia, symbolising justice and democracy, were conceptualised by the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi. The flag features the Ashok Chakra, the Inconic Supreme Court building and the book of the Constitution.

Supreme Court judge Hima Kohli, a Fierce Protector of Women's Rights Retires
Justice Hima Kohli, who served as a Supreme Court judge for three years, retired on September 1.
Justice Kohli was elevated to the Supreme Court on August 21, 2021. Before that, she was elevated as the first woman Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court after being elevated from the Delhi High Court.
Paying his tribute to Justice Kohli, Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud hailed her as a 'fierce protector of the rights of women'.
As Justice Hima Kohli vacated her space, the Supreme Court is now left with only two women judges- Justices B. V. Nagarathna and Bela M. Trivedi.

Collegium Recommends Transfer of Justice Shamim Ahmed from Allahabad High Court to Madras High Court
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the transfer of Allahabad High Court Judge JustIce Shamim Ahmed to Madras High Court.
The Collegium comprising the Chief Justice of India (CJI) D. Y. Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B. R. Gavai, Surya Kant and Hrishikesh Roy rejected Justice Ahmed's request for a reconsideration of the proposal for his transfer to the Madras High Court.
The Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court and the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court were also consulted, as per the resolution.
Justice Ahmed was appointed an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on December 12, 2019, and made a permanent High Court judge on March 26, 2021. Before his elevation, he had been practicing as lawyer since 1993, dealing with civil, Constitutional, service, labour, company and criminal laws.
