East India's First Disabled Varsity at Ranchi: Jharkhand

  • The Jharkhand government is working on a plan to open eastern India's first university for physically challenged students in Ranchi (Jharkhand). The proposed university will offer education according to the needs of students with disabilities. Higher and Technical Education Minister Champai Soren directed officials to prepare a proposal to open the university for physically challenged students in Ranchi.

CBSE Gets Affiliated with School Games Federation of India

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) formalised its affiliation with the School Games Federation of India (SGFI). This partnership will allow winners of the CBSE National Games to participate in the SGFI National School Games starting from the 2024-25 academic year.
  • CBSE also issued a caution against an organisation named the CBSE Board School Games Welfare Society (CBSE-WSO) in Agra, which falsely claims affiliation with CBSE to organise sports events. Schools have been advised to avoid any engagement with this entity as it is not officially recognised by CBSE.

IIT Madras to Provide Rs. 5 crore to Sports Start-ups; to Introduce 4-Year Course on Sports Science

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) announced that they will provide an investment of up to Rs. 5 crore to selected sports start-ups for a period of five years. In a two day sports tech start-ups conclave which taook place in New Delhi, the institute announced that they aim to support at least 200 sports tech start-ups, in a period of five years.
  • The funding for the selected start-ups will be provided by the IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies.

  • The Meghalaya government is set to integrate QR codes into school textbooks, allowing students to access additional information using smartphones,
  • According to Education Secretary A. Marak, this initiative aims to enhance students' time management skills and empower them with supplementary knowledge options.

IP University's New Courses Get Pharmacy Council Approval

  • The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) approved multiple new pharmacy courses to be run in the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) from the 2024-25 academic session. The courses include – DPharm, BPharm, MPharm in pharmaceutics, pharmacology, phytopharmacy and phytomedicine and pharmaceutical chemistry.
  • As a first, these courses will be introduced on the university campus. All the programmes will be run under the Centre of Excellence in Pharmaceutical Sciences (CEPS). At present CEPS is running two PG programmes – MSc in medicinal chemistry and drug design and MSc in bioinformatics and PhD programme in pharmaceutical chemistry.

Maharashtra Announces Free Higher Education for EWS, SEBC, and OBC Girls

  • The Maharashtra government announced that higher education for girls belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) will be made free.
  • This initiative, aimed at promoting women's education, was decided during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Additionally, tuition and exam fees for orphaned students of both genders will be waived, as per a government resolution (GR).
  • Starting from the 2024-25 academic year, the scheme is expected to cost Rs. 906 crore. The GR specifies that female students applying to recognised vocational courses through the Centralised Admission Process in government, aided private, semi-aided private, and non-aided colleges, as well as polytechnics, autonomous government universities, and open universities, will benefit from this initiative.
  • The courses covered include those in higher and technical education, medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, animal husbandry, pisciculture, and dairy development.

IIT Madras, Israel's Tel Aviv University Collaborate to Offer Water Quality Course

  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is collaborating with Tel Aviv University, Israel, and KMCH-Research Foundation (KMCH-RF), Coimbatore, to offer a water quality course aimed at creating water-literate citizens.
  • The four-month-long course, offered in hybrid mode through the NPTEL online platform is for final-year science and engineering students, and for anyone with a technical background who is interested in water quality.
  • Students will have the option to attend the lectures online or in offline mode, or recorded form. Their understanding of the concepts will be evaluated by online assignments and quizzes.

NMC Approves 113 New Undergraduate Medical Colleges for 2024

  • The National Medical Commission (NMC) approved the establishment of 113 new undergraduate medical colleges for the academic year 2024-25. This significant move aims to increase the number of MBBS seats across the country, benefiting aspiring medical students and addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals nationwide.
  • The NMC's approval follows an earlier public notice issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), inviting applications for new undergraduate medical colleges.
  • The NMC was established through the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, enacted by Parliament.
