Quad Foreign Ministers Meet on the Sidelines of UNGA

The Foreign Ministers of the Quad nations met in New York on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
The four top diplomats reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific and advancing a vision for a region that is peaceful and prosperous, stable and secure, free from intimidation and coercion, and where disputes are settled in accordance with international law.
The focus of the meeting was to reiterate common ground and take stock of the Quad's existing initiatives.
The Quad or the Quadrilateral coalition is a plurilateral framework comprising India, Australia, Japan and the US formed in 2017 to counter China's aggressive behaviour in the strategically important Indo-Pacific region.
His Excellency Dennis Francis, Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, was elected as President of the 78th Session of the General Assembly. The election took place at United Nations Headquarters, in New York, on 1 June 1, 2023.

China, Syria to Announce New Strategic Partnership

China and Syria announced the formation of a strategic partnership as Chinese leader Xi Jinping kicked off a series of diplomatic meetings ahead of the upcoming Asian Games.
China is one of only a handful of countries outside the Middle East that Assad has visited since the 2011 start of a civil war that killed more than half a million people, displaced millions and battered Syria's infrastructure and industry.

Singapore Overtakes Hong Kong as World's Freest Economy

Singapore dethroned Hong Kong and became the world's freest economy, according to a report released by Canadian think tank Fraser Institute.
For the first time since the Economic Freedom of the World Index started in 1970, Hong Kong slipped to second place from the number one spot, and its score is about to drop even further.
Some of the tenets used to gauge economic freedom index are measured based on ease of international trade, freedom to enter and compete in markets, as well as business regulations, amongst other yardsticks.
The findings in the 2023 report are based on data from 2021, the most recent year with available comparable statistics across the 165 jurisdictions. It measures the economic freedom of individuals or their ability to make economic decisions on their own.

Philippines to Drag China to International Court for Damaging Coral Reef in EEZ

The Philippines is mulling dragging Beijing to an international tribunal after accusing it of harvesting and destroying coral reefs within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The Philippines would pursue legal action after its agencies assess the extent of environmental damage in the Iroquois Reef in the Spratly islands.

Azerbaijan, Armenia Reach Cease-fire Deal for Breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh

Ethnic Armenians in Azerbaijan's breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh agreed to a Russian proposal for a ceasefire, 24 hours after Azerbaijan began an offensive to take control of the enclave that killed dozens and injured hundreds.
The separatist Armenian forces in Karabakh said that Azerbaijan had broken through their lines and seized a number of heights and strategic road junctions.
With the mediation of the command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh, an agreement was reached on the complete cessation of hostilities.
Nagorno-Karabakh is recognised internationally as part of Azerbaijan.
