SC Collegium Recommends Appointment of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P. B. Varale as Supreme...

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Prasanna B. Varale as a judge of the Supreme Court of India.
He is senior-most High Court Judge belonging to a Scheduled Caste and the only Chief Justice belonging to a Scheduled Caste among the Chief Justices of High Courts across the country.
Justice Varale enrolled as an advocate in August 1985 practiced under advocate SN Loya during his initial years. He also served as a lecturer at Ambedkar Law College in Aurangabad till 1992.
He was appointed a judge of the Bombay High Court in July 2008.
He was elevated as Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka in October 2022.

Centre Notifies Appointment of Advocate as Gujarat High Court Judge

The President of India approved the appointment of Advocate Pranav Shailesh Trivedi as a Judge of the Gujarat High Court.
The Supreme Court collegium had recommended this appointment earlier in January. Although the Supreme Court collegium had initially decided to return the proposal regarding Trivedi to the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court for being considered at the appropriate stage, the Centre referred the file back to the collegium requesting positive consideration.
With this appointment, the working strength of the Gujarat High Court rises to 30 judges, out of the sanctioned strength of 52.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment of Five Calcutta High Court Additional judges as P...

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of five additional judges of the Calcutta High Court as permanent judges and also extended the tenure of one additional judge by one year.
While four of the five judges recommended to be made permanent will continue to remain in the Calcutta High Court, the Collegium recommended the transfer of Justice Lapita Banerji to the Punjab & Haryana High Court.
In two separate resolutions, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising the Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B. R. Gavai recommended the following judges for permanent appointment: Justice Ananya Bandyopadhyay, Justice Rai Chattopadhyay, Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul), Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury and Justice Lapita Banerji.

Supreme Court Directs High Courts to Establish Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centres by April

The Supreme Court directed all the High Courts to take necessary steps to establish Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centres (VWDCs) in all districts. The Supreme Court also mentioned that this exercise must be completed on or before April 30, 2024.
The bench led by Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud, Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra made the aforesaid directions while hearing a Miscellaneous Application on the need to establish vulnerable witness courtrooms in compliance with the decision of the top court in the State of Maharashtra v Bandu Daulat (2018) case.
In the decision, the Supreme Court issued the directions for setting up special centres for examination of vulnerable witnesses in criminal cases. The decision was taken to facilitate a conducive environment for recording the statements of vulnerable witnesses.

Six Lawyers Designated Senior Advocates by Gujarat High Court

The Gujarat High Court designated six lawyers including one woman lawyer as Senior Advocates.
The lawyers who were conferred the gown are: Pareshkumar Ramanlal Jani, Sanjay Ashok Mehta, Trusha Kanubhai Patel, Harshit Shirishchandra Tolia, Tejas Manubhai Barot and Dhaval Dharmendra Vyas.
The decision was taken at a full court meeting of the High Court.

Senior Advocate P. S. Raman New Advocate General of Tamil Nadu

Senior Counsel P. S. Raman assumed charge as the new Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, days after Senior Advocate R. Shunmugasundaram resigned from the post.
Tamil Nadu Governor N. Ravi's office issued a notification confirming Raman's appointment as the Advocate General.
With an experience of over 40 years at the Bar, Raman has been a designated Senior Counsel since 2004. This is also his second stint as the Advocate General as he had previously held the office between 2009 and 2011.

Those Acquitted on Benefit of Doubt in Cases of Moral Turpitude can be Appointed in Armed Forces:...

The Punjab and Haryana High Court held that persons acquitted in offences of moral turpitude on the ground of benefit of doubt, can be appointed to armed forces.
Justice Jagmohan Bansal said that there is no absolute bar on appointing such persons to armed forces.
The Court made the observation in a judgement directing the Central government to consider appointing a man acquitted in a case under Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) in 2019, as a Constable of the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
