World No Tobacco Day

  • World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31. It provides an opportune moment for health organisations, governments, and individuals to participate in various activities and campaigns aimed at highlighting the risks associated with tobacco use and encouraging a tobacco-free lifestyle.
  • Established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1987, it was initially called World No Smoking Day. The day aimed to draw global attention to the devastating health effects of tobacco use. In 1988, the focus shifted to an annual celebration promoting awareness not just about the dangers of tobacco, but also the tactics of the tobacco industry.
  • The first official observance was on April 7, 1988, coinciding with WHO's 40th anniversary. However, in 1989, the observance date was changed to May 31st to provide a more focused and annual commitment to tobacco control.
  • The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2024 is 'Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference'.

Goa Statehood Day

  • Goa marks its Statehood Day every May 30, honouring its official separation from Daman and Diu as a state in 1987.
  • Though the smallest state in terms of area, it packs a punch in popularity. For over four and a half centuries, Goa was a Portuguese colony. In 1961, it was liberated by India and became a union territory alongside Daman and Diu. But Goa's journey wasn't over. Later in 1987, it was granted full statehood, becoming the 25 member of the Indian Union.

Hindi Journalism Day

  • Hindi Journalism Day is celebrated every year on May 30 in India. This day is dedicated to the first ever Hindi newspaper was published.
  • The history of Hindi Journalism Day dates back to May 30, 1826, when the first Hindi newspaper, Udant Martand, was published in Calcutta, India. The newspaper was published in the country under the British rule. This was the first time that the Hindi language had been used in journalism in India.

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

  • On the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, celebrated annually on May 29, we honour the extraordinary contributions of peacekeepers towards international peace and security. Since the establishment of the first UN peacekeeping mission in 1948, more than two million peacekeepers have served in 71 missions, helping countries navigate from war to peace.
  • It was first commemorated in the year of 2003 after a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2002, in response to an official request from the Ukrainian Peacekeepers Association as well as the Government of Ukraine to the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly). The United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) was established on this date in the year of 1948 to oversee the ceasefire following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and it was the first ever UN peacekeeping deployment.
  • The United Nations commemorated the International Day of Peacekeepers 2024 under the theme, 'Fit for the Future: Building Better Together'.

International Day of Action for Women's Health

  • International Day of Action for Women's Health is observed on May 28 each year. This day is dedicated to promoting and protecting women's health and well-being. It also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the issues faced by women and girls around the world.
  • In the year 1987, the Latin American and Caribbean Women's Health Network (LACWHN) declared May 28 as International Day of Action for Women's Health during the Women's meeting in Costa Rica. Later, Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) promoted this day on an international level, including Latin America.
  • The theme for the International Day of Action for Women's Health 2024 is 'Mobilizing in critical times of threats and opportunities'.
