Peru's Fujimori, Divisive Head of Political Dynasty, Dies

Former President of Peru Alberto Fujimori, who steered economic growth during the 1990s but was later jailed for human rights abuses stemming from a bloody war against Maoist rebels, died. He was aged 86.
Fujimori governed Peru between 1990 and 2000 before being forced from office amid allegations of corruption.
Fujimori, the son of Japanese immigrants, was the little-known chancellor of a farming university when elected to office in 1990. He quickly established himself as a cunning politician whose hands-on style produced results even as he angered critics for concentrating power.
He slayed hyperinflation that had thrown millions of Peruvians out of work, privatised dozens of state-run companies and slashed trade tariffs, setting the foundations for Peru to become, for a while, one of Latin America's most stable economies.

American Becomes the Fastest Woman to Cycle Globe

A US ultra-endurance cyclist claimed a new world record for the fastest woman to circumvent the globe by bike.
Lael Wilcox took 108 days, 12 hours and 12 minutes to cycle 29,169km (18,125 miles), starting and ending in Chicago.
She beat the 2018 record held by Jenny Graham, from Scotland, whose journey took 124 days 11 hours.
Wilcox crossed 21 countries on four continents before arriving back in Chicago.
She cycled up to 14 hours a day on her journey, which will now be verified for inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Govt Ropes in Amitabh Bachchan for Anti-cyber Crime Efforts

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan will power the government's anti-cyber crime efforts and has joined the Ministry of Home Affairs campaign to prevent cyber frauds in India.
Bachchan made the announcement of his decision to join the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre's anti cyber crime campaign asking citizens to stay alert and mindful of their vulnerabilities.
Bachchan joined on the request of Home Minister Amit Shah.

James Earl Jones, Voice Of 'Darth Vader', 'King Mufasa', Dies At 93

James Earl Jones, the actor whose rich baritone provided the voice for "Star Wars" villain Darth Vader, died at the age of 93.
Jones, who also voiced King Mufasa in Disney's animated feature "The Lion King," had a prolific and varied career.
Over six decades he worked with some of the greatest figures in cinema and theater, including Stanley Kubrick in his 1964 Cold War satire "Dr Strangelove."
During his career, Jones won three Tony awards including two Emmys and a Grammy, as well as an honorary Oscar in 2011 for lifetime achievement.
In 1971, he became only the second Black man nominated for an Academy Award for best actor, after Sidney Poitier.

Indian-Americans Feature in TIME 100 Most Influential People in AI 2024

TIME Magazine's 'TIME100 Most Influential People in AI 2024' list celebrates 15 Indian or Indian-origin individuals, showcasing their contributions to the AI landscape. Key figures include Sundar Pichai (CEO, Google), Satya Nadella (CEO, Microsoft), Ashwini Vaishnaw (Indian Information Technology Minister), Nandan Nilekani (Infosys co-founder), and Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor. Kapoor's inclusion follows his legal victory in 2023, protecting his image from unauthorized AI use. Anil Kapoor made it to the TIME 100 AI list, following his victory against unauthorized AI-generated content using his likeness. In 2023, a New Delhi court ruled in his favor, curbing entities from misusing his image. Kapoor emphasized protecting personality rights against AI misuse for commercial purposes.

Indian Student Makes in Guinness World Records for Building Smallest Vacuum Cleaner Using Pen

A 23-year-old student from India was named in the prestigious Guinness World Records for building the world's smallest vacuum cleaner using a pen. This device was created by Tapala Nadamuni.
Guinness said, "Measuring just 0.65 cm (0.25 in) – less than the width of an average pinkie fingernail – it is 0.2 cm smaller than the previous record set in 2022."
Guinness said that Nadamuni formerly held this record in 2020 with a 1.76-cm vacuum, and spent the past two years trying to win it back, including two rejected attempts.
Nadamuni's vacuum cleaner is made mostly from a refillable ballpoint pen, with the addition of some small bits of plastic and metal. Inside the vacuum is a tiny rotating fan powered by a four-volt vibration motor, creating suction.

Siddhartha Aggarwal Sets Record as Oldest Indian to Swim English Channel Solo

Siddhartha Aggarwal from Bengaluru made history by becoming the oldest Indian to swim solo across the English Channel. At the age of 49, Aggarwal completed the 42 km swim in 15 hours and six minutes. His remarkable achievement surpassed the previous record set by Srikaanth Viswanathan, who swam the Channel solo at age 46 in 2018.

Tennis Legend Luis Ayala Passes Away at 91

The tennis world mourns the loss of a true legend as Luis Ayala, one of Chile's most celebrated athletes, passed away at the age of 91. The Chilean Tennis Federation made the somber announcement, marking the end of an era in South American tennis history.
Born in Santiago, Chile, Luis Ayala emerged as a dominant force in tennis during the 1950s and 1960s. His journey from a young enthusiast to an international tennis star is a testament to his dedication and skill.
Over his illustrious career, Ayala amassed an impressive: 46 singles titles
This remarkable achievement solidified his status as one of the most successful tennis players of his generation.
