First Secretary-Level Meeting Between Defence Ministries of India & Democratic Republic Of Congo

The first Secretary-level meeting between the Defence Ministries of India and the Democratic Republic of Congo was held in New Delhi. The Defence Ministry said that the meeting was aimed at identifying areas for collaboration to fulfil the potential of defence cooperation between the two countries. During the meeting, detailed discussions were held to promote cooperation in training and the defence industry. The Indian delegation also highlighted the significant progress India has made in defence manufacturing capability. The Democratic Republic of Congo side shared the need for modernization of their Armed Forces.

MoU Signed to Set up 3 Testing Facilities in Chennai under Defence Testing Infra Scheme

The Ministry of Defence signed an MoU to establish three state-of-the-art testing facilities in Chennai for the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor, one each in unmanned aerial system, electronic warfare and electro-optics domains. The memorandum of understanding (MoU), under the Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme (DTIS), was exchanged between senior officials of the ministry and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited in the presence of Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane in New Delhi.
With an outlay of Rs. 400 crore, the DTIS was launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in May 2020 to set up state-of-the-art testing facilities in collaboration with private industry and central or state government, promoting indigenous defence production, reducing military equipment imports and enhancing self-reliance.

Three Theatre Command Bases Identified

Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured that the creation of Theatre Commands was on track, the Defence Ministry has identified three locations in Lucknow, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram as their headquarters.
The Department of Military Affairs (DMA) under Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, who is responsible for raising the theatre commands, is now focusing its energy towards implementing over 150 points to enhance integration among the three services and make ready for the multi-domain warfare of the future.
As per the plans of the DMA, the Western Theatre being raised to look after the Pakistan side is planned to be raised at Jaipur while the Northern Theatre to tackle the threat from the eastern and northern sides is planned to be set up at Lucknow.
The Indian Navy-headed Maritime Theatre Command is now planning to come up at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and will be looking after the maritime borders of the country and threats emanating from the maritime zone.

India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise 'Nomadic Elephant' Begins in Meghalaya

The 16th edition of Joint Military Exercise 'Nomadic Elephant' between the armies of India and Mongolia commenced in Meghalaya's Umroi. The exercise, slated to be conducted until July 16, 2024 aims to bolster joint military capabilities for counter-urgency operations in semi-urban or mountainous areas.
Represented by 45 personnel from a battalion of 'Sikkim Scouts' along with personnel from other arms and services, the Indian contingent joined hands with the Mongolian counterpart from the 150 Quick Reaction Force Battalion.
The exercise focuses on operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain. Tactical drills during the exercise include Response to a Terrorist Action, Establishment of a Joint Command Post, Establishment of an Intelligence and Surveillance Centre, Securing of a Helipad/Landing Site, Small Team Insertion and Extraction, Special Heliborne Operations, Cordon & Search Operations, besides Employment of Drones and Counter Drone Systems, amongst others.

Indian Army Contingent Participates in India- Thailand Joint Military Exercise Maitree

The Indian Army contingent is participating in the 13th edition of India-Thailand joint military Exercise MAITREE being conducted from the July 1 to 15, 2024 at Fort Vachiraprakan in Tak Province of Thailand.
The Indian Army contingent comprising 76 personnel is being represented mainly by a Battalion of the Ladakh Scouts along with personnel from other arms and services. The Royal Thailand Army contingent also comprises 76 personnel mainly from 1st Battalion, 14 Infantry Regiment of 4 Division.
Exercise MAITREE aims to foster Military Cooperation between India and Thailand. The Exercise will enhance combined capabilities in executing Joint Counter Insurgency and Terrorist Operations in Jungle and Urban Environments under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The Exercise focused on high degree of physical fitness, joint planning and joint tactical drills.

IAF Inaugurates Weapon System School to Enhance Combat Prowess

The Indian Air Force (IAF) marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Weapon System School (WSS) at Begumpet, Telangana. Air Chief Marshal V. R. Chaudhari, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), presided over the ceremony, signalling a major step towards bolstering the IAF's offensive capabilities.
The establishment of the WSS stems from the IAF's 2022 decision to create a dedicated Weapon System Branch (WSB). This specialised branch unifies operators of various ground-based and specialist weapon systems, streamlining operations and fostering a more cohesive approach to offensive strategies.

Major General V. T. Mathew Takes Over as General Officer Commanding of Karnataka, Kerala Sub Area

Major General V. T. Mathew took over as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area.
The General Officer is an alumnus of Sainik School Kazakkotam in Thiruvananathapuram, National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He was commissioned into 11 Madras Regiment in December 1988.
In his 35 years of meritorious service the General Officer has held various important instructional, staff and UN peace keeping appoints during his service. He has been on UN Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) as Military Observer and was also the Chief Operational Officer, Force HQ UNISFA, Sudan.

SEBEX 2, India's New Explosive Revolutionising Military Firepower

India took a significant leap in military technology with the development of SEBEX 2, a powerful new explosive. Certified by the Indian Navy, SEBEX 2 is reported to be twice as lethal as the standard Trinitrotoluene (TNT), marking it as one of the most powerful non-nuclear explosives globally. This breakthrough would revolutionise artillery shells and warheads, enhancing their destructive capabilities without increasing their weight.
SEBEX 2 was rigorously tested under the Defence Export Promotion Scheme of the Indian Navy. The formulation was developed by Economic Explosives Ltd (EEL), a subsidiary of Nagpur-based Solar Industries. The certification process completed, highlights the explosive's enhanced firepower and blast effect, which surpasses any currently available solid explosive.
The development of SEBEX 2 falls under the Make in India initiative, showcasing India's commitment to advancing its defense capabilities with indigenous technologies. The explosive uses a composition based on high-melting explosive (HMX), significantly improving the lethality of warheads, aerial bombs, artillery shells, and other munitions.
