Central Government Notifies Transfer of Justice V. M. Velumani from Madras High Court to Calcutta...

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice notified the transfer of Justice V. M. Velumani from the Madras High Court to the Calcutta High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium had first recommended Justice Velumani's transfer to the Calcutta High Court in September 2022.
Justice Velumani however, had requested the Collegium to reconsider the proposed transfer. She had requested that she be sent to a High Court in one of the states in North East India instead, so that she could retain her official residence in Chennai.
Her request was rejected and in March, the Collegium had reiterated its recommendation to transfer her to Calcutta.

Surat Judge, who Convicted Rahul Gandhi in Defamation Case, Becomes District Judge of Rajkot

Chief Judicial Magistrate of Surat, Hadirash H. Varma, who convicted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 defamation case and sentenced him to two years imprisonment, was promoted as the district judge of Rajkot.
The CJM court had convicted Gandhi on March 23, 2023, for allegedly saying that all thieves have Modi surname.
Addressing an election rally in Kolar district of Karnataka on April 13, 2019, the former MP from Wayanad constituency in Kerala had said, "Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi. How come all the thieves have 'Modi' as a common surname?"

The Kerala Story: Supreme Court Rejects Fresh Plea Seeking Stay on Release of Film

The Supreme Court rejected another petition, which sought stay on release of the controversial movie "The Kerala Story" directed by Sudipto Sen.
The matter was mentioned by Senior Advocate Huzefa Ahmadi before Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud.
Ahmadi apprised the Apex Court that the High Court of Kerala refused to constitute a Bench to hear the matter, despite the Supreme Court yesterday allowing the petitioners to seek an urgent hearing on the petition before the movie hit the theatres.
The CJI noted that the High Court had already passed a detailed order on May 2 to decline interim stay of the movie, in view of the certification granted by the Central Board of Film Certification.

Supreme Court Refuses to Commute Death Sentence of Balwant Singh Rajoana

The Supreme Court refused to reduce the death sentence of Babbar Khalsa terrorist Balwant Singh Rajoana to life imprisonment.
The Court refused to commute the death sentence on the ground of long pendency of the mercy petition before the President of India.
Balwant Singh Rajoana who was formerly a BKI operative was convicted for his role in the assassination of the former Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh, in August 1995.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Names of 3 Lawyers for Appointment as Bombay High Court Judges

The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud recommended the names of three advocates for appointment as judges of the Bombay High Court.
The collegium, which also comprised Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and K. M. Joseph, proposed the names of lawyers Shailesh Pramod Brahme, Firdosh Phiroze Pooniwalla and Jitendra Shantilal Jain for appointment.
In September 2022, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court made the recommendations in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues and the file was forwarded by the Department of Justice to the Supreme Court in April 2023.

Justice T. S. Sivagnanam New Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court

The government officially announced the appointment of Justice T. S. Sivagnanam as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. Justice Sivagnanam, who has been the senior-most judge at the court, had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice since March 31, 2023. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his appointment as the Chief Justice in February 2023.
Justice T. S. Sivagnanam started his legal practice in September 1986. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Madras High Court on March 31, 2009, and became a permanent judge on March 29, 2011. In October 2021, he was transferred to the Calcutta High Court where he has been serving since then. He is scheduled to retire on September 15, 2025.
The Calcutta High Court is one of the oldest and most prestigious High Courts in India. It was established in 1862, under the Indian High Courts Act, and is located in Kolkata, West Bengal. The Calcutta High Court has jurisdiction over the state of West Bengal and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The court has a Sanctioned strength of 72 (Permanent - 54, Additional - 18) judges.
