Six HCs Get New Chief Justices

  • The Centre notified the appointment of new Chief Justices for six High Courts.
  • Those whose appointments were notified are Justice Ritu Bahri of Punjab and Haryana HC as CJ of Uttarakhand HC, Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava of Rajasthan HC as CJ of the HC, Justice S. Vaidyanathan of Madras HC as CJ of Meghalaya HC, Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh of Patna HC as CJ of Orissa HC, Justice Vijay Bishnoi of the Rajasthan HC as CJ of the Gauhati HC and Justice Arun Bhansali of Rajasthan HC as CJ of Allahabad HC.

  • The Central government notified the appointment of Justice P. S. Dinesh Kumar as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
  • The Supreme Court Collegium in January had recommended the appointment of Justice Kumar as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.

Justice P. S. Dinesh Kumar is Acting Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court

  • The Central government notified the appointment of Justice P. S. Dinesh Kumar as Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
  • The development came subsequent to the elevation of Justice Prasanna B. Varale to the Supreme Court.
  • Justice Kumar has been a judge of the Karnataka High Court since 2015.
  • Before his elevation to the bench in 2015, Justice Kumar had been in practice as a lawyer since 1990 and appeared in several important cases in different High Courts and the Supreme Court.

Central Notifies Appointment of Four Calcutta High Court Additional Judges as Permanent Judges

  • The Central government cleared the appointment of four additional judges of the Calcutta High Court as permanent judges.
  • The following are the additional judges who were made permanent: Justice Ananya Bandyopadhyay, Justice Rai Chattopadhyay, Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul) and Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury.

SC Scraps Allahabad High Court Order Staying Education Tribunals

  • The Supreme Court set aside an order of the Allahabad High Court restraining the state government from constituting tribunals under a proposed law, the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Tribunal Bill, 2021, which proposes to constitute two benches of the tribunal in Lucknow and Allahabad.

Senior Advocate Abhinav Mukerji is Additional Advocate General for Bihar in Supreme Court

  • Senior Advocate Abhinav Mukerji was appointed as an Additional Advocate General (AAG) for the state of Bihar to conduct cases before the Supreme Court.
  • Notably, Mukerji is the first ever AAG for Bihar in the apex court.
  • Mukerji, who is a first generation advocate, was designated a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India. He is a gold medalist in the Advocate-on-Record (AoR) examination by the Supreme Court of India and has served as the Standing Counsel for State of Bihar and the Additional Advocate General for the State of Himachal Pradesh in the Supreme Court.

PM Inaugurates Diamond Jubilee Celebration of Supreme Court

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Supreme Court of India in Delhi. During the event, he launched several citizen-centric information and technology initiatives, including Digital Supreme Court Reports (Digi SCR), Digital Courts 2.0, and a new bilingual website for the Supreme Court.
  • The Prime Minister congratulated everyone on the occasion, and highlighted the significant role the Supreme Court plays in upholding the principles of freedom, equality, and justice outlined in the Indian Constitution.
  • The event was attended by Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud, Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, and other prominent figures in the legal system.
  • Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud is an Indian jurist, who is the 50th and current Chief Justice of India serving since November 2022.
