UGC Approves 101 Universities for Online & Distance Learning in 2025

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) approved 101 universities and 20 Category-I institutions to offer open and distance learning (ODL) programmes for the academic year 2025-26, to be commenced in July-August.
  • In a push towards digital education, the commission also authorised 113 universities to conduct online courses. Additionally, 13 institutions received clearance to launch specialised online learning (OL) programmes. The Commission announced October 15 as the final date for student admissions into recognised ODL and online programmes.

Eco-friendly Wheat Straw Tableware Developed by IIT-Roorkee Researchers

  • As North India gears up for another stubble-burning season, a recurring environmental challenge that chokes Delhi and nearby regions with smog, scientists at IIT-Roorkee have introduced a promising alternative that addresses two pressing issues at once: crop residue management and plastic waste.
  • A team led by Professor Vibhore Kumar Rastogi from the Department of Paper Technology at IIT-Roorkee's Saharanpur campus developed biodegradable, disposable tableware made from wheat straw, a common agricultural by-product often burned after harvest. This marks India's first successful attempt to transform wheat straw into eco-friendly tableware.
  • The innovation has already cleared industrial trials at an Aurangabad-based company, indicating strong potential for large-scale production. The research group also includes postdoctoral fellow Rahul Ranjan and PhD scholar Jasmine Kaur.

HelpAge India Launches Campaign to Promote Active Life for Senior Citizens

  • HelpAge India, a non-profit organisation working for elders, marked International Day of Older Persons in October 2025, launched its new campaign, 'AdvantAge60: Powering Aspirations – Active, Enabled & Empowered', to redefine ageing and promote active, meaningful engagement for senior citizens.
  • The event, held in Chennai, was attended by Justice N. Kirubakaran, former Judge of the Madras High Court, and V. Balakrishnan, IPS, Inspector General of Police (Administration), along with academics and social welfare officials.

Ashwini Vaishnaw Launches NIELIT Digital University to Expand Digital Learning Opportunities

  • Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the NIELIT Digital University (NDU) platform in October 2025. Along with this, he also opened five new NIELIT centres in Odisha, Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Daman, Mizoram, and Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh).
  • The new NIELIT Digital University started to make digital education available to every student, whether they live in cities, villages, or remote areas. The online platform will offer various industry-based courses and training programs to help young people build careers in the growing digital economy.

18 Hospitals Across State to Deliver Quality Cancer Treatment Through Mahacare

  • The Maharashtra govt in September 2025, approved a comprehensive policy to provide affordable and quality cancer treatment across state. Under the policy, the govt announced the formation of a dedicated foundation, 'Mahacare', to manage and coordinate cancer treatment at 18 hospitals, including those in Nagpur, Chandrapur, Amravati and Yavatmal.
  • The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. The Maharashtra Cancer Care, Research and Education Foundation (Mahacare Foundation) will act as the nodal agency for implementing the policy.
  • It will oversee 18 hospitals that will be integrated into a three-tier structure, categorised as L1, L2 and L3 centres. These facilities will provide a full spectrum of cancer services, including diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, palliative care, postgraduate and super-speciality education, research, drug support and public awareness programmes.

Mansi Kasliwal Becomes 1st Woman to Head Caltech's Palomar Observatory

  • California Institute of Technology (Caltech) appointed Prof Mansi Manoj Kasliwal as director of Palomar Observatory, making her the first woman and the second PIO to lead the facility. Shrinivas Kulkarni (2006-18) was the first PIO to head the observatory, located atop Palomar Mountain in north San Diego, California.
  • Palomar Observatory is home to three active research telescopes: the 5.1m Hale Telescope, the 1.2m Samuel Oschin Telescope, and the 1.5m telescope. Research there is conducted by a wide community of astronomers from Caltech and other domestic and international partner institutions.
  • Kasliwal, a professor of astronomy at Caltech, is internationally recognised for her pioneering work on explosive cosmic events such as supernovae and colliding neutron stars. In 2022, she received New Horizons in Physics Prize for her leadership in electromagnetic follow-ups of cosmic phenomena.
  • Born in Indore, Kasliwal moved to the US at 15. She earned her bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 2005 and completed her PhD in astronomy at Caltech in 2011. After postdoctoral research at Carnegie Observatories, she returned to Caltech, where she is now a tenured professor.

SAIL-MTI and IIM Jammu Signs MoU to Foster Future-Ready Leadership

  • Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), through its Management Training Institute (MTI) entered into an MoU with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu to collaborate on Executive Education Programmes aimed at building future-ready leaders. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally signed in September 2025, at SAIL's Corporate Office, Ispat Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • In line with SAIL's commitment to develop capable leaders for a changing business landscape, this collaboration is a key step toward strengthening organizational capacity, adopting global best practices and advancing the shared goal of nation-building through leadership excellence.

MP: First Healthcare Centre Inaugurated in Paatalkot for Tribal Communities

  • In step towards ensuring last-mile delivery of government services, Dr. Rashmi Choudhary, Assistant Commissioner, National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), New Delhi, visited the remote Paatalkot valley in Chhindwara district and inaugurated a much-awaited health care centre for tribal communities in Setpember 2025.
  • Paatalkot--a deep and mystical valley in the Tamia block--has long been home to Gond and Bharia tribes, classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). For decades, its 12 scattered villages with nearly 4,000 residents remained cut off from basic amenities, forcing villagers to rely on steep trails for movement and to travel long distances for healthcare.
  • Under central initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Janman Yojana, Dharti Abba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, and Aadi Karmayogi Abhiyan, significant progress made in roads, housing, drinking water, electricity, and education.
