University of Strathclyde Offers Scholarships to Indian Students for Engineering

Indian students aiming to start a course in the engineering field can now apply for a scholarship worth £3,000. The University of Strathclyde, Glasgow is offering scholarships for international students who will be joining postgraduate taught and postgraduate research courses in academic year 2023-24.

Jamia to Start Medical College, International Campus Soon

The Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Prof. Najma Akhtar announced that the Union Government has granted permission to start a medical college in JMI.
Akhtar also announced that JMI is aiming to open an international campus in Middle East soon.
The institute hosted its Centenary Year Convocation at Vigyan Bhawan. In the ceremony, around 12500 students were awarded degrees and diplomas, including the ones who graduated in the 2019 and 20202. The ceremony was held at Vigyan Bhawan.
Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, was the Chief Guest of the ceremony. Minister of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan too presided over the convocation.

CBSE Introduces 22 Languages as Mediums of Instruction

In a groundbreaking development, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) expanded its mediums of instruction to include 22 languages, encompassing regional languages and mother tongues, alongside English and Hindi.
This momentous decision, as announced by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, aims to promote linguistic diversity and provide students with a more inclusive and comprehensive learning experience.
This progressive move aligns with the principles of the National Education Policy (NEP), which emphasises the significance of embracing regional languages and mother tongues in the education system.
To support this transformative change, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been entrusted with the responsibility of developing appropriate textbooks in the newly introduced languages.
This ensures that students receive quality education across subjects in their chosen medium of instruction.

Punjab to Get 8 Modern, Free UPSC Coaching Centres for Aspirants

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the opening of eight state-of-the-art training centres to provide coaching for aspiring candidates of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations.
Concerned over the declining representation of Punjab's candidates in central services, especially UPSC exams, Mann aims to reverse this trend by offering quality coaching to the state's talented youth.
The proposed centres will aim to prepare candidates for prestigious positions like the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and other important services.

Only 1% Women Live in Countries with High Gender Parity, Female Empowerment: UN Report

A new global report, launched by UN Women and UNDP at the Women Deliver Conference, highlighted the challenges in achieving gender parity and women's empowerment worldwide. The report introduced two indices, Women's Empowerment Index (WEI) and Global Gender Parity Index (GGPI), as tools to assess progress in women's human development.
The analysis of 114 countries indicated that women's power and freedom to make choices and seize opportunities remain largely restricted. Low women's empowerment and significant gender gaps are common.
The WEI measures women's power and freedoms across dimensions like health, education, inclusion, decision-making, and violence against women.
Globally, women achieve only 60% of their full potential, as measured by the WEI.
The GGPI evaluates women's status relative to men in core dimensions of human development, including health, education, inclusion, and decision-making.
On average, women achieve 72% of what men do, reflecting a 28% gender gap.
Less than 1% of women and girls live in countries with both high women's empowerment and gender parity.
More than 90% of the female population lives in countries with significant empowerment deficits and gender gaps.
The WEI and GGPI serve as tools for policymakers, providing evidence for progress and guiding action towards women's empowerment and gender equality.

IIT Guwahati Signs MoU with the Indian Council of World Affairs

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) to build capacity/skills in international affairs and foreign policy.
The MoU was signed between Professor Parameswar Krishnan Iyer, Officiating Director, IIT Guwahati, and Ambassador Vijay Thakur Singh, Director-General, ICWA, with the objective of working together in pursuit of their goal of expanding awareness and knowledge on international affairs and Indian foreign policy. The agreement is valid for a period of 3 years.

London Retains Its Number 1 Position in QS World's Best Cities for Students

The latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Rankings for Best Student Cities 2024 released on July 19.
London retains its top spot as the world's best student city for the fifth consecutive time. Tokyo grabbed the second place, followed by Seoul in third. Melbourne was fourth, while Munich fifth.
One area of concern for all Indian cities which remained was the Desirability indicator, where none have made it to the top 100 globally. The Desirability indicator considers metrics related to quality of life, pollution index, safety, and the propensity of prospective students to select a city for their university experience, as per QS ranking.
