Indian Youth Uday Bhatia and Manasi Gupta Receive 'Diana Memorial Award'

  • Uday Bhatia and Manasi Gupta from India were honoured with the prestigious 'Diana Memorial Award'.
  • Along with them, a total of 20 people from around the world were honoured with the 'Diana Memorial Award'.
  • This award is given every two years in memory of Princess Diana. It recognises exceptional youth for their social work or humanitarian services.
  • The Diana Award charity, established in memory of the late Princess of Wales, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
  • Uday Bhatia is an inventor from Delhi. His company, Uday Electric, founded by the 18-year-old, is headquartered in Delhi. Uday's low-cost invention can provide relief from power cuts.
  • Manasi Gupta is a mental health campaigner from Haryana. The Huesothemind Foundation, founded by Manasi Gupta, is headquartered in Gurugram. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the 24-year-old's mental health services were appreciated, and she received recognition.

Renowned Poet Prabha Varma Selected for Saraswati Samman for the Year 2023

  • Renowned poet Prabha Varma has been selected for the Saraswati Samman for the year 2023 for his work in Malayalam language. He has been considered for this award for his Malayalam language poetry work, Roudra Sathwikam and also for his contribution to the literature during the period 2013 to 2022. 
  • Roudra Sathwikam is a poetic work of Prabha Varma in Malyalam language which was published in 2022. The novel in poetic verse probes the conflict between power and politics, individual and state, art and power in a unique manner.
  • Instituted in 1991 by K. K. Birla, Saraswati Samman is one of the most prestigious literary awards in the country. It is given every year to an outstanding literary work written in any Indian language by an Indian citizen and published within the last 10 years. It carries a citation, a plaque, and a cash prize of Rs. 15 lakh. The recipient is chosen by a selection committee, whose current head is former Supreme Court judge, Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri.

Chameli Devi Jain Award 2024 for Outstanding Woman Media Person

  • The prestigious Chameli Devi Jain Award 2024 for Outstanding Woman Media Person of the Year has been given jointly to two remarkable journalists:
  • Greeshma Kuthar – Independent Journalist and Ritika Chopra – Indian Express.
  • An independent jury comprising senior journalists selected the winners.
  • The jury members were:
    • Radhika Ramaseshan (Chair) – Senior journalist and columnist
    • Mariyam Alavi – Award-winning journalist and author
    • Richard Mahapatra – Managing Editor, Down to Earth
  • The winners were chosen from more than 65 entries of women journalists.
  • The Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Woman Media Person of the Year was set up by The Media Foundation in 1980.
  • It is named after Chameli Devi Jain, a freedom fighter and community reformer who was imprisoned during India's independence movement.
  • The first award was given in 1982, and since then, it has been presented annually.
  • The award recognises impactful journalism in fields such as social development, politics, gender justice, human rights, health, conflict, and consumer values.

Ratan Tata Awarded P. V. Narasimha Rao Memorial Award for Philanthropy Work

  • Ratan Tata, former chairman of Tata Sons, has been bestowed with the prestigious PV Narasimha Rao Memorial Award. He received the award for his outstanding philanthropic contributions. The award ceremony took place in Mumbai.
  • The P. V. Narasimha Rao Memorial Award is named after the former Prime Minister of India.
  • It is an award of recognition for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to social welfare and humanitarian causes.
  • Ratan Tata has donated more than half of his income to charity, both at an individual level and through Tata Trusts.
  • His philanthropic initiatives have spanned a wide range of areas, including healthcare, education, rural development, and environmental sustainability.

Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize 2023

  • Writer Kannaiyan Daksnamurthy's book ''Karunkundram' was selected for Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize 2023. Kannaiyan Daksnamurthy has translated Mamang Dai's English novel 'The Black Hill' into Tamil.
  • The prize carries an amount of Rs. 50,000 and a copper plaque.

Indian Writer Amitav Ghosh Awarded Prestigious Erasmus Prize 2024

  • The Praemium Erasmianum Foundation awarded the Erasmus Prize 2024 to the Indian writer Amitav Ghosh. He received this prestigious honour for his passionate contribution to the theme 'imagining the unthinkable', in which he explores the unprecedented global crisis of climate change through his literary works.
  • Born in Kolkata in 1956, Ghosh has produced a vast body of work, including historical novels and journalistic essays that carry the reader across continents and oceans. His works are grounded in thorough archival research and transcend boundaries and time periods with literary eloquence.
  • The Erasmus Prize is an annual prize awarded by the board of the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation to individuals or institutions that have made exceptional contributions to culture, society, or social science in Europe and the rest of the world.

Riken Yamamoto Wins 2024 Pritzker Architecture Prize

  • Riken Yamamoto, a Japanese architect from Yokohama, was named the winner of the 2024 Pritzker Architecture Prize, widely regarded as the highest honour in the field of architecture.
  • Yamamoto's work emphasises the importance of community and shared spaces. He believes in creating architectural spaces that foster harmony and societal relationships while respecting individual freedom.
  • The Pritzker Architecture Prize is an annual award founded in 1979 by Jay A. Pritzker and his wife, Cindy. It honours a living architect, whose built work demonstrates talent, vision, and commitment, contributing significantly to humanity and the built environment.
