Israel-Palestine Conflict: Retired Justice S. Muralidhar Appointed Chair of UN Probe Panel

  • The United Nations appointed former Orissa High Court Chief Justice S. Muralidhar as the Chair of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and Israel, thus placing an Indian jurist at the helm of one of the UN's most closely watched human-rights investigations amid the continuing Israel-Palestine conflict.
  • The appointment was announced by Human Rights Council President Ambassador Jürg Lauber, who confirmed that Justice Muralidhar will lead the three-member body tasked with examining alleged violations of international humanitarian and human-rights law on both sides of the conflict. He will serve alongside Florence Mumba of Zambia and Chris Sidoti of Australia.

Justice Vikram Nath Nominated Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority

  • Supreme Court judge, Justice Vikram Nath, was nominated as the next Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
  • His appointment is effective from November 24, 2025.
  • The position was previously held by Justice Surya Kant, who was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI).
  • The nomination was made by President of India Droupadi Murmu in exercise of powers conferred by Clause (b) of Section 3(2) of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, which empowers the President to nominate a sitting Supreme Court judge to serve as Executive Chairman of NALSA.

Justice J.K. Maheshwari is Chairperson of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

  • Supreme Court Justice Maheshwari was appointed as chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).
  • A gazette notification intimating the development was issued by the National Legal Services Authority.
  • The nomination of Justice Maheshwari was made by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
  • Justice Maheshwari, who has been serving on the Supreme Court since 2021, will now head the SCLSC, which is responsible for providing free legal services to eligible litigants in matters before the Supreme Court.
  • The post was earlier held by Justice Surya Kant who was elevated as CJI.

Advocate Vivek Sharma New Advocate General of Chhattisgarh

  • The Chhattisgarh government appointed Additional Advocate General Vivek Sharma as the new Advocate General of the state. Governor Ramesh Bais accepted the resignation of former Advocate General Prafulla Kumar Bharat and approved Sharma's appointment, according to notifications issued by the Department of Law and Legislative Affairs.

Justice Surya Kant Takes Oath as 53rd Chief Justice of India

  • Justice Surya Kant took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI), marking the beginning of his 14-month tenure in the country's highest judicial office.
  • President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Kant, who succeeded incumbent CJI Bhushan R. Gavai. The President had earlier appointed Justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice of India "in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution", following the recommendation of CJI Gavai.

Supreme Court Says Courts Cannot Fix Timelines for President or Governors on Bill Assent

  • The Supreme Court held that the Court cannot impose any timelines for decisions of the President and the Governor on granting assent to Bills under the Constitution. The Apex Court pronounced its opinion advisory on whether it can impose timelines on the President and State Governors for acting on Bills passed by State Legislatures.

NLU Jodhpur Wins 20th LAWASIA Moot Court Competition

  • A team from National Law University Jodhpur (NLU Jodhpur) won the 20th LAWASIA Moot Court Competition held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
  • The team comprised Ansh Arora, Paavni Kaur Mago and Bianca Bhardwaj.
  • They competed against Hanoi Law University in the final rounds. The team also won the Spirit of LAWASIA award.
  • OP Jindal Global Law School was the other Indian team participating this year.
  • The moot problem addressed procedural issues of sovereign immunity in arbitration and enforceability of pre-arbitral negotiation steps. It also included concerns of labour law violations, forced labour and questions of fundamental breach and agency under the UNIDROIT Principles.
