SC Collegium Recommends Andhra HC Judge as CJ of Uttarakhand HC

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended appointment of Justice Narendar G, currently serving as a judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court, as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Uttarakhand.
The Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B. R. Gavai noted that the current Chief Justice Uttarakhand Ritu Bahri is due for retirement on October 10, 2024, and therefore appointment to that office is required to be made.
The Supreme Court Collegium also recommended elevation of nine advocates as judges of the Bombay High Court.

Centre Notifies Appointment of Chief Justices to Eight High Courts

The Central government notified the appointment of Chief Justices to eight High Courts.
The judges appointed as Chief Justice are: Justice Manmohan acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court appointed as regular Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Justice Rajiv Shakdher (of Delhi High Court) appointed as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court, Justice Suresh Kait (of Delhi High Court) appointed as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court, Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji (of Calcutta High Court) appointed as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar (of Bombay High Court) appointed as Chief Justice of Kerala High Court, Justice Tashi Rabstan (acting Chief Justice of J&K and Ladhak High Court) appointed as regular Chief Justice of the J&K and Ladakh High Court, Justice Shriram Kalpathi Rajendran (of Bombay High Court) appointed as Chief Justice of Madras High Court, Justice M. S. Ramachandra Rao (Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court) transferred to Jharkhand High Court.
The recommendations by the Supreme Court Collegium with regard to the Chief Justices were made in July 2024. However, this month (September), it altered its earlier recommendations with respect to the appointment of Chief Justices (CJs) to four High Courts.

Centre Notifies Appointment of Five Additional Judges, as Permanent Judges of Madras HC

The Central Government notified the appointment of five additional judges of the Madras High Court as permanent judges.
The additional judges made permanent are Justices L. C. Victoria Gowri, P. B. Balaji, K. K. Ramakrishnan, Ramachandran Kalaimathi, and K. G. Thilakavadi.
The Collegium of the Madras High Court unanimously recommended the names of the additional judges for appointment as permanent Judges of the High Court in April 2024.
The Chief Minister and the Governor of Tamil Nadu had both concurred with this recommendation.
Accordingly, in September, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended that the five additional judges of the Madras High Court be made permanent judges.

Centre Notifies Transfer of Justice Shamim Ahmed from Allahabad High Court to Madras High Court

The Central Government notified the transfer of Allahabad High Court judge Justice Shamim Ahmed to Madras High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium comprising the Chief Justice of India (CJI) D. Y. Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B. R. Gavai, Surya Kant and Hrishikesh Roy had in August rejected Justice Ahmed's request for a reconsideration of the proposal for his transfer to the Madras High Court.
Justice Ahmed was appointed an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court in December 2019, and made a permanent High Court judge in March 2021. Before his elevation, he had been practicing as lawyer since 1993, dealing with civil, Constitutional, service, labour, company and criminal laws.

Justice B. V. Nagarathna was appointed as the Chairperson of the Supreme Court Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee following the retirement of Justice Hima Kohli, who was earlier heading the Committee.
The Committee is formed as per the Gender Sensitisation & Sexual Harassment of Women at the Supreme Court of India (Prevention, Prohibition & Redressal) Regulations, 2013.

Supreme Court Collegium Changes 3 Earlier Recommendations for High Court Chief Justice Appointments

The Supreme Court Collegium passed a new resolution making changes to its earlier recommendations for the appointment of Chief Justices of the High Courts.
The Collegium made changes regarding its earlier recommendations regarding Justice Suresh Kumar Kait (Delhi High Court), Justice G. S. Sandhawalia (Punjab and Haryana High Court) and Justice Tashi Rabstan (Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court).
These new recommendations were made by the Collegium in its resolution passed in supersession of its previous resolution passed on July 11.
Justice Suresh Kumar Kait is now recommended to be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Earlier, he was recommended as the Chief Justice of J&K&L High Court.
Justice Tashi Rabstan, who was earlier proposed as the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, is now recommended to be appointed as the Chief Justice of his parent High Court (J&K&L High Court).
Justice G. S. Sandhawalia, who was earlier proposed as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court, is proposed to be appointed as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court after October 18, 2024 (the date of retirement of Justice Rajiv Shakhder, who was earlier recommended as the CJ of HP HC).
