Atal Innovation Mission Launches 'ATL Industry Visit'

  • India's manufacturing sector is experiencing rapid growth, thanks to the government's focus on initiatives like the 'Make in India' program. In line with this vision, the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and Bayer have joined hands to introduce school students to modern manufacturing techniques and technologies.
  • The Atal Tinkering Labs, under AIM, in collaboration with Bayer, launched a unique industry visit initiative at Bayer's manufacturing facility in Vapi, Gujarat. This initiative aims to provide students with first-hand exposure to the latest manufacturing processes used in industries, as well as orient them with cutting-edge technologies.
  • Chintan Vaishnav, Mission Director of Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog, expressed his belief that this collaboration with Bayer would ignite the young minds at the Atal Tinkering Labs, contributing to India's journey towards becoming a global economic powerhouse.
  • Bayer has been a partner of Niti Aayog since 2021, supporting various initiatives of the Atal Innovation Mission. As part of its commitment to promoting science-based learning, Bayer has adopted 125 Atal Tinkering Lab schools in seven states, with a special focus on all-girls schools to promote diversity and inclusion. Through partnerships with implementing partners, Bayer has trained 150 Atal Tinkering Lab coordinators and nurtured over 20,000 students in designing and building innovative solutions to real-world challenges.

Ministry of Education Releases Report on Performance Grading Index 2.0

  • Chandigarh and Punjab emerged as the best performers in school education across indicators such as learning outcomes, equity and infrastructure in the Union Ministry of Education's Performance Grade Index (PGI) for the year 2021-22 report. Punjab and Chandigarh were placed in the sixth grade of the index. The PGI grades states and UTs in 10 categories. No state or UT could make it to the top five grades. Chandigarh and Punjab were on 'Prachesta -2' level for which a state should score between 641-700 out of total 1,000 points.
  • Following them, there were six states and UTs at the level below. Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu were placed at the 7th level — Prachesta-3 — with a score between 581-640 points. Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Mizoram were placed at the bottom of the pile with a score between 401-460 (Akanshi–3).
  • The PGI for states/UTs was first released for the year 2017-18 and so far, it has been released up to the year 2020-21.
  • Last year, the top-performing states — Kerala, Punjab, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh — had scored between 901 and 950 points out of 1,000.

J&K Launches India's First Chatbot for People in Mental Distress

  • Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched India's first Tele-MANAS chatbot in the Union Territory, which will ensure round the clock services of health counsellors, clinical psychologists and consultants.
  • The service was launched after Sinha inaugurated 'J-K Health Conclave' on mental health and non-communicable diseases at SKICC.
  • Tele-MANAS is a two-tier system. Tier 1 comprises State Tele MANAS cells, which includes trained counsellors and mental health specialists. Tier 2 comprises specialists at District Mental Health Programme (DMHP)/Medical College resources for physical consultation and/or eSanjeevani for audio visual consultation, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare website.

Allahabad University to Soon Start 10 New Multidisciplinary Courses

  • A total of 10 new multidisciplinary courses will start from this session at Allahabad University, also known as the Oxford of the East. Under the flagship programme, the New Education Policy (NEP) of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the university administration has prepared new courses.
  • However, admission to only 7 courses will start from this session. Further, admissions to other courses will be given from the next academic session. These courses include five years of BCA and MCA, MSc Cognitive Science, BSc and MSc Family and Community Science, 5-Year Integrated Courses in Disaster Management and Environmental Studies, BA LLB Honours, 5-Year Integrated Law Course, and 5-Year MBA Course.
  • Apart from this, proficiency courses in Music, Sports, NCC, Elements of the Constitution, Mental Health, Financial Market, Discovery Science and Technology, Film and Theater & Therapeutic Nutrition and Yoga are also being started. Along with this, new courses are being started in European languages, French, Russian and German proficiency courses, and in oriental languages Urdu, Sanskrit and English.

New Medical College on RIMS Pattern Coming Up in Ranchi

  • Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced the establishment of a new medical college in Ranchi, following the pattern of the state's renowned Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).
  • The objective is to offer world-class healthcare facilities and ensure equal access to healthcare for all citizens. The government's initiatives also include the opening of medicine shops at the panchayat level, creating self-employment opportunities, and providing air ambulance services at affordable rates.
  • Chief Minister Soren emphasised the need to bridge the gap in healthcare services between the rich and the poor. The upcoming medical college in Ranchi will focus on providing excellent healthcare facilities to meet the growing demand.

Jaishankar, Zanzibar President Witness Signing of Agreement to Set Up IIT Madras Campus

  • During his visit to Tanzania, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with President of Zanzibar Hussein Ali Mwinyi and also witnessed the signing of the agreement on the establishment of IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar. EarlierJaishankar held high-level talks and co-chair the 10th Joint Commission Meeting with his counterpart Stergomena Tax.
  • To strengthen the education ties between the two countries, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is opening its first-ever overseas campus in Tanzania's Zanzibar in October 2023 with a batch of 50 undergraduate students and 20 master's students.
  • The new IIT campus will be set up in Zanzibar under the name IIT Madras at Zanzibar. Zanzibar will be one of three campuses outside of India, with the others located in Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur.

Amit Jain IIT-Kharagpur's New Registrar

  • IIT-Kharagpur appointed Captain (retd) Amit Jain as its new registrar. Jain was earlier senior advisor to Indian Navy at INS Angre in Mumbai.
  • Jain replaced outgoing registrar Tamal Nath.
  • In his three-decades-long career with the Navy, Jain held positions such as navigating officer, operations officer and executive officer. He was also in charge of admin logistics for ships as the commanding officer for the Indian Navy, INS Dwarka Okha in 2019

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) relaxed the criteria for appointment of teachers in colleges and universities by reversing its own regulation making PhD degree mandatory for the post of assistant professors. Teachers' organisations welcomed the decision and said that they have been demanding that the UGC withdraw the 2018 regulation.

Andhra Govt. CTE Sign MoU to Establish 'Centre of Excellence in IT and Cyber Security'

  • The Consortium for Technical Education (CTE) and Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) joined forces to establish the Centre of Excellence in Information Technology and Cyber Security. This collaboration aims to enhance employability skills, encourage research and product development, and provide hybrid mode training programmes, which include an extensive range of interactive video-based training courses along with hands-on virtual labs managed on CTE proprietary Advanced Learning Management platform, webinars and in-person lectures, seminars on software and cyber security products and technologies trends, for students, unemployed youths, and IT/Cyber security professionals in Andhra Pradesh.
  • With this collaboration, APSSDC and CTE will establish a Centre of Excellence in IT and Cyber Security across various locations in Andhra Pradesh, in phases. This partnership includes access to the latest software & cyber security products, designing customised courses, providing qualified trainers, and offering joint certifications and Industry recognised certifications to all universities, colleges, schools and Government IT departments within the state.
  • The major objective of this project is to offer skill development programs and training opportunities that cater to the evolving needs of the IT and Cyber security industry.
