Rajnish Kumar Gets Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize

An Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) professor Rajnish Kumar received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize. Professor Kumar was awarded for his contributions to fundamental understanding of the nucleation and growth of clathrate hydrates, CO2 sequestration in solid hydrates and methane recovery from marine gas hydrates.
The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB) is a science award in India presented annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental, in biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, mathematics, medicine and physics. It is the most coveted award in multidisciplinary science in India. The award is named after the founder Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar. It was first awarded in 1958.
The prize comprises a citation, a plaque, and a cash award of Rs. 5 lakh (US$6,300).

Satyajit Majumdar Honoured with Dr. V. G. Patel Memorial Award 2023

Mumbai Professor Satyajit Majumdar, dean of School of Management and Labour Studies from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), received the 'Dr. V. G. Patel Memorial Award-2023 for Entrepreneurship Trainer, Educator and Mentor' for his work in promoting and strengthening entrepreneurship in India. Patel is widely acknowledged as the Father of the Entrepreneurship Movement in India.
Majumdar's name was chosen among 400 applicants from 26 states by a jury nominated by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Ahmedabad. Over the last two decades, Majumdar has played an important role in the development of entrepreneurship, especially in the social sector.
Award is given to a professional for his/her outstanding performance/contribution in Entrepreneurship Training/Education/Mentoring/Knowledge or Technology Driven Start-Ups.
Award consists of a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 100,000.

Peregrine Falcon Image Wins Bird Photo Award

Photographer Jack Zhi's dramatic picture of a female peregrine falcon protecting her young, won this year's (2023) Bird Photographer of the Year award.
The picture was taken in California and beat more than 20,000 entries to claim the prize.
The Young Bird Photographer of the Year award went to German photographer Anton Trexler for his atmospheric picture of a blackbird silhouetted against the moon.

P. V. Satyanarayana Receives Dr. MS Swaminathan Award

Dr. P. V. Satyanarayana, Principal Scientist, Agricultural Research Station, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), Ragolu, was awarded the prestigious 8th Dr. MS Swaminathan Award for his contributions in the field of agriculture during the period 2021-2022. The biennial Dr. MS Swaminathan Award, constituted by the Retired Indian Council of Agricultural Research Employees Association (RICAREA) and Nuziveedu Seeds Limited (NSL), includes a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh and a gold medal, was presented to Dr. Satyanarayana at an event at Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR), Hyderabad.
Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director General (DG), ICAR and Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) gave away the award in the presence of senior scientists. Some of the notable achievements of Dr. Satyanarayana include the national award as Team Leader for the Best Golden Jubilee AICIP Centre Award in 2015, the Best Scientist Award by the Seedman Association in 2021.

65th Ramon Magsaysay Awards 2023 Winners List

The Ramon Magsaysay Award, often called the 'Nobel Prize of Asia', is a notable accolade that represents exceptional spirit and influential leadership. This year (2023), in the ceremony's 65th edition, four Asians were given the Ramon Magsaysay Award, joining the ranks of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Mother Teresa, Dalai Lama, Satyajit Ray, and many others. They are Korvi Rakshand from Bangladesh, Eugenio Lemos from Timor-Leste, Miriam Coronel-Ferrer from the Philippines, and Ravi Kannan R. from India. The award carries a certificate, a medallion bearing the likeness of the late President, and a cash prize of USD 50,000.
Ravi Kannan R. the first formally trained oncologist in the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC), helped develop the non-profit facility to become the full-fledged, comprehensive treatment centre it is known as today.
According to the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, Kannan was selected for this year's award because of his strong devotion to his medical profession, focusing on what medicine is truly for: pro-health and people-centred treatment.
The award was established in April 1957 by the trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund based in New York City with the concurrence of the Philippine government.
The award is named after Ramon Magsaysay, the seventh president of the Republic of the Philippines after World War II.
The award recognizes and honours individuals and organizations in Asia regardless of race, creed, sex, or nationality, who have achieved distinction in their respective fields and have helped others generously without anticipating public recognition.
The awards used to be given in six categories, five of which were discontinued in 2009:

SVAMITVA Scheme of Ministry of Panchayati Raj Wins National Award for e-Governance 2023

SVAMITVA (Survey of Villages Abadi and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas) Scheme of Ministry of Panchayati Raj was conferred with the prestigious National Award for e-Governance 2023 (Gold) for Application of Emerging Technologies for Providing Citizen Centric Services at the 26th National Conference on e-Governance (NCeG) organised by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), Government of India in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
The representatives of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Survey of India and NIC-GIS received the National e-Governance Gold Award conferred to SVAMITVA Scheme in the category of Application of Emerging Technologies for Providing Citizen Centric Services from Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
SVAMITVA Scheme of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj provides ownership to property owners in village-inhabited area by using latest drone and GIS technology. The Property Cards facilitate monetization of rural residential assets for bank loan and other financial benefits and help in the settlement of land-related disputes through the preparation of 5cm accuracy maps. The Scheme is implemented with the collaborative efforts of Survey of India being the technology implementation partner, State Revenue and Panchayati Raj Departments, and NIC–GIS.
