World NGO Day

  • The World NGO Day is an annual international observance on February 27 to recognise the contributions of non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The day was first celebrated in 2010 and has since become an annual event that highlights the work of NGOs around the world. It provides an opportunity to advocate for policies that support their efforts.
  • World NGO Day was first proposed in 2010 by the Baltic Sea NGO Forum. The event was accepted by the forum in 2012. Initially, the day was only recognised in countries which were part of the forum like Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, and others.
  • It was only in 2014 that it truly started being observed across other countries when leaders from organisations like the United Nations and European Union attended the event.

  • The Central Excise Day is celebrated in India every year on February 24 to commemorate the establishment of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC). The day is observed to recognise the efforts of the Central Excise and Customs officials who work tirelessly to safeguard the country's economy. The Central Excise Day is also observed to commemorate the Central Excise Act, which was passed on February 24, 1944.

World Peace and Understanding Day

  • World Peace and Understanding Day is commemorated on February 23, every year. It is closely linked to Rotary International, a global service organisation that is dedicated to promoting peace and understanding worldwide. The observance of this day also marks the formation of the Rotary club and hence, Rotary International plays a significant role in promoting the day.
  • This day commemorates the anniversary of the formation of Rotary International. Attorney Paul Harris from Illinois organised a meeting with his three friends in a downtown office building in Chicago on February 23, 1905, where the idea of Rotary Club took shape for the first time. Together with Gustavus Loehr, Silvestor Schiele, and Hiram Shorey, Harris named the organisation as Rotary Club because their meeting locations would "Rotate". It was a professional group representing friendly smiles and small-town values.
  • They officially adopted the name Rotary International in 1922. This came into being after the four men encountered fellow professionals worldwide who also supported the club's vision of global peace and humanitarian values.
  • Over the years, World Peace and Understanding Day is marked to commemorate the founding of one of the largest philanthropic organisations in the world.

Eighteenth World Security Congress in Jaipur

  • A 3-day long 18th UIC World Security Congress jointly organised by the International Union of Railways (UIC), Paris and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) took place in Jaipur. Theme of this year's (2023) Congress was 'Railway Security Strategy: Responses and Vision for Future'.
  • The World Security Congress is a globally recognized security platform that brings together representatives from member Railway Organizations, delegates of UIC, policy makers, senior law-enforcement officials from State Polices and Railway Protection Force to discuss the current security challenges and deliberate on innovative solutions in the Railway Sector.
  • The UIC (Union International Des Chemins) or International Union of Railways established in 1922 is headquartered in Paris. It is the worldwide professional association representing the railway sector for research, development & promotion of rail transport.

World Thinking Day

  • World Thinking Day, formerly Thinking Day, is celebrated annually on February 22 by all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. The day honours sisterhood, camaraderie, and women's empowerment.
  • The necessity for World Thinking Day was raised back in 1926 at the fourth female scout international conference. The conference agreed on dedicating February 22 as Thinking Day. Lord Baden-Powell, who founded the Boy Scouts of America, and his wife Lady Olave Baden-Powell, who served as the organisation's first global head guide, were both born on February 22.
  • The theme for World Thinking Day 2023 was 'Our World, Our Peaceful Future: The environment, peace, and security.'

International Mother Language Day

  • International Mother Language Day is observed annually on February 21. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the linguistic diversity that exists around the globe and promoting it.
  • As per the official website of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Bangladesh came up with the initiative to observe International Mother Language Day. The day has been celebrated worldwide since February 21, 2000, following approval by the UNESCO General Conference in 1999.
  • The theme for 2023 International Mother Language Day was 'Multilingual education – a necessity to transform education.'
