Mumbai Airport Makes 100% Switch to Green Energy

  • Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) entirely switched to green sources for its energy consumption needs, making it one of India's 100 per cent sustainable airports.
  • Notably, the CSMIA was the first in India to launch hybrid technology that solely runs on green energy since April 2022. This sustainable initiative undertaken by the CSMIA is part of the airport's efforts that reduces its carbon footprint and further propels its journey towards 'Net Zero' emissions.
  • The aviation sector globally has a huge role to play in strengthening sustainability pillars like environment, social and economic.
  • Out of the total 100 per cent needs, the CSMIA procures around 5 per cent of the airport's electricity requirement through its onsite solar generation and the rest 95 per cent from other green sources such as hydro and wind energy.

Australia Vows New Plan to Stop Extinction Crisis

  • Australia plans to halt the loss of any more species and end its status as "the mammal extinction capital of the world".
  • More than 100 threatened animals and plants - including iconic species like the koala - will be prioritised under new conversation strategies.
  • The plan includes a promise to protect a third of the continent's land mass.
  • Earlier this year a report found Australia's environment is in shocking decline.
  • Many native animals and plants face threats including habitat loss, invasive pests and weeds, climate change, and more frequent and destructive natural disasters.
  • The goal to list 30% of Australia's land as protected under national environment laws will help vulnerable species and habitats.
  • The 10-year strategy also aims to improve resilience to climate change, build "insurance" populations of some key species in predator-free zones, and better monitor existing populations.

Haryana to Develop World's Largest Safari Park

  • Haryana will develop the world's largest jungle safari park in the Aravalli Range.
  • The 10,000-acre safari park will cover Gurugram and Nuh districts.
  • At present, Sharjah is home to the largest curated safari park outside Africa. Opened in February 2022, the Sharjah Safari covers an area of about 2,000 acres.
