Justice Goel Retires as NGT Chief

National Green Tribunal (NGT) Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel retired after a five-year stint. The NGT during his tenure starting July 6, 2018, disposed off a total of 16,042 cases. Of these, 8,419 were settled by the Justice Goel-led Benches. Justice Goel is also credited with taking up cases on NGT's unmanned Benches.
Justice Goel initiated a special drive to take up more than five-year-old cases or other cases of complex nature. These were heard and disposed of by a special Bench comprising the Chairperson and vice-chairperson.

SC Collegium Recommends 7 Judges as Chief Justices for Various High Courts

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the name of seven different judges as the Chief Justice of seven separate High Courts.
The Collegium recommended the names for the High Courts of Bombay, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Orissa and Kerala.
The Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sanjiv Khanna made these recommendations at a collegium meeting.
If the name is cleared by the Centre then Gujarat HC will get a woman Chief Justice as Collegium proposed Justice Sunita Agarwal as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Gujarat.
Once appointed, she would be the only woman Chief Justice of a High Court as currently there is no woman representing the same post.
The SC Collegium recommended Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Judge, High Court of Judicature at Allahabad as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Bombay.

Supreme Court Issues Notice over Vacancies in National Human Rights Commission

The Supreme Court issued notice on a petition regarding three vacancies in the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The Bench of Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud and Justice P. S. Narasimha passed the order on a petition filed by Radhakanta Tripathy.
The petitioner-in-person contended that there were three vacancies in the Commission.
These included: (1) Judicial Member, who has to be a Judge or a former Judge of the Supreme Court; Judicial Member, who is or was a Chief Justice of the High Court; and A woman member.

Maharashtra Government Announces Post-retirement Allowance of Rs. 20,000 for High Court Judges

Maharashtra government decided to provide post-retirement benefits and allowances to the judges of the Bombay High Court.
The monetary allowance of Rs. 20,000 will be provided for housekeeping, chauffeur as well as telephone expenses to retired judges and Chief Justices of the Bombay High Court.
Out of the Rs. 20,000, Rs. 14,000 was cut out to hire one domestic help and a chauffeur and Rs. 6,000 for telephone expenses.
Notably, the benefits shall extend to surviving spouses of the retired Judges as well.
This allowance is an additional benefit to the retirement benefits granted by the Union Law Ministry which includes pension amount, leave encashment, death-cum-retirement gratuity.

Supreme Court Dismisses Petitions Seeking Reclassification of Caste System, Phasing Out of Reserv...

The Supreme Court dismissed two public interest litigations, which sought directions to gradually phase out the current reservation system, besides reclassification of the current caste system prevalent in the country.
Terming the petitions as 'frivolous' and an abuse of the process of the court, the Bench of Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud and Justice P. S. Narasimha imposed a cost of Rs. 25,000 each on the petitioner. Both the petitions were filed by Advocate Sachin Gupta.

Karnataka Government Notifies Appointment of Five Additional Advocate Generals

The Karnataka government notified the appointment of five Additional Advocate Generals (AAGs) to the Supreme Court and to conduct the state government's cases before the top court.
Further, the State government also notified the appointment of fifteen AAGs to represent the state before the Karnataka High Court.
The development was notified by the state's Law, Justice, and Human Rights Department.
The AAGs appointed to represent the State government in the Supreme Court are Nishanth Patil, Mohammed Ali Khan, Pratheek Chadda, Avishkar Singhvi and Aman Panwar.
