Jammu and Kashmir High Court Grants Recognition to Kashmir Advocates Association

  • The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh granted recognition to the Kashmir Advocates' Association (KAA), while exercising the powers vested with it under Section 58 of the Advocates Act, 1961
  • The decision was taken after the Full Court made a recommendation to recognise the KAA under the Advocates' Welfare Fund Act, 2001.
  • Advocate Waseem Gul is the President of KAA, while Advocate Mubashir Majid Malik is its Vice President. Jeetender Singh is the KAA's General Secretary and Adil Muneer Andrabi is its Joint Secretary.

Three New Criminal Laws much Needed but Their Names Should be in English: Former CJI P. Sathasivam

  • Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) and former Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam urged the Central government to retain the English names for the three new criminal laws - the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
  • The new laws are set to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and the Indian Evidence Act and will come into effect on July 1, 2024.
  • The former CJI sent an official communication to the Union government, the Law Minister and the Law Secretary asking them to retain the existing English nomenclatures of the criminal laws in the country, considering that Article 348 of the Indian Constitution too mandate that all proceedings in the Supreme Court and in every High Court shall be in English.

Former Kerala High Court Chief Justice S. Manikumar appointed Chairperson of TN Human Rights Comm...

  • Former Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, Justice S. Manikumar, was appointed the Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission (TNSHRC).
  • Justice Manikumar would serve a three-year term or until he reaches the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier, starting from the date he assumes office.
  • The retired judge was appointed as Chairperson as per the provisions of Section 22 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1961(Appointment of Chairperson and other Members of State Commission).
  • Justice S. Manikumar earlier served as a judge of the Madras High Court before he took over as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court in October 2019.
  • He retired from the Kerala High Court on April 24, 2023.

Dammalapati Srinivas New Advocate General for Andhra Pradesh

  • Senior Advocate Dammalapati Srinivas was appointed Advocate General for the State of Andhra Pradesh.
  • He succeeded S. Sriram, who resigned earlier this month (June 2024).
  • Srinivas did his law from VDS Law College in Vijayawada and registered as a member of the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh.
  • He worked as a junior with N. V. Ramana, who went on to serve as Chief Justice of India, before working under Senior Advocate S. R. Ashok. He previously served as Advocate General from 2014 to 2019, during the tenure of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government.

Supreme Court to Organise Special Lok Adalat

  • The Supreme Court will organise a special Lok Adalat from July 29 to August 3 to facilitate amicable settlement of suitable pending cases.
  • The special Lok Adalat will be organised in the 75th year of the establishment of the apex court, which came into existence on January 26, 1950, with the coming into force of the Constitution.
  • The apex court said that Lok Adalats are an integral component of judicial system in the country, enhancing alternative dispute resolution as a means of expediting and fostering amicable settlements.
