International Day of Yoga
The International Day of Yoga is observed on June 21 every year to celebrate the ancient Indian practice, known to elevate the physical and mental well-being of its practitioners.
The idea of World Yoga Day was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to the 69th United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014, where he urged the UN to declare a global day for yoga. He suggested June 21 due to its symbolic significance as the Summer Solstice- the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
This proposal received immense support, with 177 UN member countries co-sponsoring it — the highest number for a UN General Assembly resolution. As a result, on December 11, 2014, the United Nations officially declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga.
The theme for International Day of Yoga 2025 is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health.' The theme emphasises that personal wellness and planetary health are inseparably linked.
