Pando, Earth's Largest Living Organism, is 'Breaking Up
The Pando aspen clone, also known as the Trembling Giant, is the largest known organism on our planet in terms of dry-weight mass.
This 'forest of one tree' has an estimated mass of 5.9 million kg, covers some 43 ha (106 acres) in south-central Utah's Fishlake National Forest.
It consists of more than 47,000 genetically identical above-ground stems or 'ramets' originating from a single underground parent clone.
India among Few Countries in the World Where Forest Cover is Consistently Increasing
The efforts made by the Narendra Modi government have brought positive results in the conservation of wildlife. The government has said that the coverage of Protected Areas which was 4.90 per cent of country's geographical area in 2014 has now increased to 5.03 per cent.
This includes an increase in Protected Areas in the country from 740 with area of over one lakh 61 thousand square kilometres in 2014 to 981 with an area of over one lakh 71 thousand square kilometres at present.
On the other hand, forest and tree cover has increased by 16 thousand kilometres in the last four years and India is among few countries in the world where forest cover is consistently increasing.

PM Modi Releases Wild Cheetahs in MP's Kuno National Park
Prime Minister Narendra Modi released wild cheetahs, which had become extinct from India, in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park.
Cheetahs brought from Namibia were introduced in India under Project Cheetah, which is the world's first inter-continental large wild carnivore translocation project. Out of the eight cheetahs, five are female and three are male.
The release of wild Cheetahs by the Prime Minister in Kuno National Park is part of his efforts to revitalise and diversify India's wildlife and its habitat.
The cheetah was declared extinct from India in 1952.
Darjeeling Zoo in Bengal Recognised as Best in India
The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP) in West Bengal's Darjeeling was adjudged the best zoo in the country, while Kolkata's Alipore Zoological Garden secured the fourth position.
A zoo directors' conference was held in Bhubaneswar and the Central Zoo Authority released the ranking list in the Odisha capital.
There are around 150 zoos across the country.
As per the list, the Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai secured the second position, followed by the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in Mysore, Karnataka.
The Darjeeling zoo was established on August 14, 1958. The zoological park is internationally recognised for its breeding and conservation programmes of endangered animal species of the eastern Himalayas, including the Snow Leopard and the Red Panda.

India's First Plastic Project Listed by EKI Energy Services Ltd
Carbon credit developer and supplier EKI Energy Services (EKI) listed a plastic project from India under a global accreditation standard, becoming the first company to do so.
With this, the Indore-based carbon credit expert that has been working in the realm of climate action and offset solutions since the last 14 years across 16 countries, has become the first ever firm to list a plastic project from the country with an aim to generate India's first-ever international plastic credits.
The project ensures that plastic waste -- predominantly Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) waste, PET flakes and chips -- is duly sourced and recycled to produce Recycled Polyester Staple Fibre (RPSF) that can be further used in the textile industry for garments and other fabric-based utility products.

Australian Senate Passes Law for 43% Greenhouse Gas Reduction
Australia's Senate voted to ensure the government's elevated target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 43% below 2005 levels by the end of the decade is enshrined in law.
The Senate passed legislation supporting the target in a vote of 37 to 30 even though several senators who supported it wanted a more ambitious 2030 target.
Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said that the Senate vote provided certainty to clean energy investors while strengthening transparency and accountability in Australia's carbon reduction processes.
