IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers Appointed as Chair-elect of IATA's Board of Governors

IndiGo announced that its CEO, Pieter Elbers, was elected as the chair-elect of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Board of Governors. He will succeed present Chair, Yvonne Manzi Makolo, CEO of Rwandair with effect from June 2024. Pieter Elbers' appointment came at a significant time for the Indian aviation industry, which is experiencing unprecedented growth and development.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a trade association of the world's airlines founded in 1945. It has 300 member airlines that account for 83% of total air traffic. IATA's headquarters are in Montreal, Canada.
IATA also works to promote the safe and sustainable growth of the air transport industry. In 2020, IATA launched its "Fly Net Zero" initiative, which aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions from aviation by 2050.
IATA is a non-profit organization and its activities are funded by its members. It is governed by a board of directors and a general assembly.

First Cruise Vessel "MV Empress" Between Chennai, Sri Lanka Flagged Off

The first international cruise vessel between Chennai and Sri Lanka 'MV Empress' was flagged off by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
The occasion also marked the inauguration of an international cruise tourism terminal, set up at a cost of Rs. 17.21 crore at the Chennai Port. The facility spread across 2,880 square metres would be able to host 3,000 passengers.
The launch of the cruise service came in the backdrop of the memorandum of understanding signed between Chennai Port and Waterways Leisure Tourism for domestic and international cruise service at the Incredible India International Cruise Conference in 2022.

Government Unveils UDAN 5.1 to Enhance Connectivity to Remote Areas

The Ministry of Civil Aviation launched UDAN 5.1 to further enhance the connectivity to remote areas of the country and achieve last mile connectivity through helicopters.
For the first time under RCS-UDAN, this round is designed specifically for helicopter routes.
UDAN 5.1 allows operators operations in routes where one of the origin or destination locations is in a priority area. Earlier both points had to be in priority areas.
Under the new scheme, airfare caps have been reduced by as much as 25% to make flying in helicopters more affordable for passengers.
The latest round of UDAN scheme is a testament to two emerging phenomenon in Indian civil aviation - first, a deeper democratisation of air travel with a focus on last-mile connectivity, and second, a growing appetite for helicopters in aiding tourism.

Goa and Uttarakhand Sign MoU to Promote Tourism between the States as Part of the 'Dekho Apna Des...

Goa and Uttarakhand signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote tourism between the states as part of the Centre's 'Dekho Apna Desh' (explore your own country) initiative.
The MoU was signed in Dehradun, the capital of the northern state.
According to Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, the move will connect The Arabian Sea with river Ganga.
Khaunte said that Goa and Uttarakhand became the first Indian states to carry forward the Dekho Apna Desh programme, which aims to encourage citizens to witness and experience the rich heritage and diverse culture of the country.

Sourav Ganguly is Brand Ambassador of Tripura Tourism

Cricket icon Sourav Ganguly was appointed the brand ambassador of Tripura tourism, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced.
The announcement came after Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury met Ganguly at his residence in Kolkata along with state officials, and discussed the proposal.
Manik Saha was confident that his participation in the campaigns would give an impetus to the state's tourism sector.
