IIM-Kozhikode, Emeritus Launch CTO Programme

  • The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) in collaboration with Emeritus unveiled the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) programme. This 12-month programme features advanced modules on technology strategy, digital transformation, and is supported by online certificate courses from Kellogg Executive Education.
  • The programme offers live online sessions led by IIM-K faculty, masterclasses from industry experts, and a three-day campus immersion at IIM Kozhikode. It includes business simulations, a capstone project, and real-world insights into topics such as disruptive technology strategies, AI, automation, and the distinctions between CTO, CIO, and CDO roles.

IIIT Hyderabad Launches AI/ML Weekend Training Programme for BTech Students

  • IHub-Data, the Technology Innovation Hub of IIIT Hyderabad, established by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India is offering six-month long weekend training classes on AI/ML for second year students, pursuing BTech programme from engineering colleges in and around Hyderabad. The classes, scheduled to be on all Sundays, require physical attendance from students at IIIT Campus in Gachibowli.
  • The six-month programme contains a judicious mix of concepts related to theory, tutorials and projects, all pertaining to modern AI/ML.

IIT Madras Hosts SWAYAM Plus National Workshop 'SkillScape 2024'

  • IIT Madras launched six new, skill-based courses, all developed by institute experts, on SWAYAM Plus in partnership with IITM Pravartak Technologies. These courses will be offered by IIT Madras, and the industry has expressed interest in recruiting students from these programmes.
  • The new courses launched include 'Advanced Electronic Manufacturing', an NCrF 4.5-level course; 'CNC Machining'—fundamentals with practical exposure; 'Comprehensive Electronics and Embedded Systems', an NCrF 4.5-level course; 'Digital Manufacturing Practice', an NCrF 4.5-level course; and 'Smart Manufacturing'—Fundamentals.
  • SWAYAM Plus is a joint initiative by the Ministry of Education, Government of India and IIT Madras, launched in line with National Education Policy's (NEP 2020) focus on promoting and encouraging employability-focused, skilling courses. It aims to build employable skills among graduates across chosen sectors critical to India's growth. The aim is also to align industry skills with academic courses, thereby bridging the gap.

IIT Delhi's Abu Dhabi Campus Inaugurated

  • IIT Delhi's first international campus was officially inaugurated in Abu Dhabi by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
  • The ceremony, attended by the Crown Prince on Monday, celebrated the launch of a pioneering academic institution aimed at bolstering the UAE's position as a global hub for education and innovation.
  • This is the second international campus of an IIT, the first being IIT Madras's international campus in Zanzibar.
  • During the inauguration, Sheikh Khaled announced strategic partnerships between IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi and leading Abu Dhabi universities, including Khalifa University, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, and Zayed University.
  • The inaugural cohort at IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi consists of 52 students pursuing undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Energy Engineering.

'Vishanu Yuddh Abhyas': Pandemic Preparedness Drill Under One Health Mission

  • Under the National One Health Mission (NOHM), a comprehensive mock drill named 'Vishanu Yuddh Abhyas' (Virus War Exercise) was held in Ajmer district, Rajasthan,. This exercise aimed to assess the pandemic preparedness of the National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT), which included experts from human health, animal husbandry, and wildlife sectors. The drill simulated a zoonotic disease outbreak to evaluate the readiness and response of the teams involved.
  • The drill focused on two main components: a) Investigation and identification of the virus responsible for the mock outbreak, and b) Actions taken to control the spread of the illness across human and animal populations. Independent observers monitored the response, which was largely prompt and appropriate, though some areas for improvement were identified.

BITS Pilani Dubai Campus Gets a New Director

  • BITS Pilani appointed Prof Souri Banerjee as the new director for their Dubai campus. He will serve as the director for the next five years. He took over from Prof Srinivasan Madapusi who served as director of Dubai campus since July 2021.
  • Professor Banerjee began his career at BITS Pilani, Pilani campus in 2004. In 2008, he became the founding Department Head of Physics at the Hyderabad campus. Before being appointed Dean of Faculty Affairs in 2018, he worked for the institute for five years as the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs in 2013, overseeing all faculty affairs at all BITS Pilani locations.

NHRC and University of Manipur's two-day Human Rights training programme

  • The University of Manipur, in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), successfully hosted a two-day 'Training Programme on Human Rights in India' on 30th August 2024 at the Court Hall, Manipur University. The event saw participation from over 100 legal experts, academicians, human rights defenders, and students.
  • The event marked a significant step in advancing human rights education and advocacy in the North-East. The NHRC continues to partner with central and state governments, academic institutions, NGOs, and human rights defenders to uphold and promote human rights, treating every individual with respect and dignity.

List of Top 10 US Universities Based on Forbes Rankings 2024

  • Forbes unveiled its annual rankings of U.S. universities for 2024, with Princeton University once again claiming the top spot for the second consecutive year. The prestigious institution excelled across all 14 evaluation criteria, which include educational excellence, financial aid, and career outcomes. Princeton boasts an acceptance rate of 6 percent, making it one of the most selective universities in the country.
  • The other 9 universities that made the top 10 are Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Yale University, University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, Rice University and Cornell University.

Odisha Launches PM-USHA Programme to Boost Higher Education

  • Odisha government officially launched the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing the state's higher education sector. The programme was introduced through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the state and the Union Education Ministry, in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan, and state Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj.
  • Under this initiative, the central government will contribute Rs 500 crore towards the development and infrastructure of higher education institutions across Odisha. Minister Pradhan described August 31 as a landmark day for the state's educational landscape, emphasising the programme's alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the National Education Policy, 2020.
  • The PM-USHA programme is designed to ensure access, equity, and excellence in higher education throughout Odisha.

Chhattisgarh Offers Interest-free Loans for Students in Maoist-affected Areas

  • Students from economically weaker families in the maoist-affected districts of Chhattisgarh will receive interest-free loans for technical and vocational higher education. Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai directed a special campaign to maximise the beneficiaries under this scheme.
  • Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma announced that the Technical Education Department has been designated the nodal department for administering the Chief Minister Higher Education Loan Interest Subsidy Scheme. The scheme covers 35 technical and vocational courses, including diplomas, and undergraduate, and postgraduate degrees, with a maximum loan limit of Rs. 4 lakh.
  • Eligible students with family incomes below Rs. 2 lakh will only pay 1 per cent interest on the loans after the moratorium period, provided regular repayments are made. The state government will cover the remaining interest directly with the banks.

IIT Roorkee Concludes 10-day iRISE Workshop for Teacher Development

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) successfully wrapped up a 10-day Teachers' Development Workshop under the Inspiring India in Research Innovation and STEM Education (iRISE) programme. Conducted from August 21 to August 30, 2024, the workshop was a collaborative effort with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Uttarakhand and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune. The primary goal was to empower teachers of classes VI to X in Uttarakhand to become innovation champions within their districts.
