Centre Launches State University Research Excellence Scheme to Create Robust Research and Develop...

The government launched State University Research Excellence scheme to augment the research capabilities in a structured way to create a robust R&D ecosystem in state and private universities and colleges, including self-financed institutions working within these universities.
State University Research Excellence (SERB-SURE) is a new innovative scheme of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a statutory body of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) that can foster collaboration for high-end research at state and private universities and colleges.
The new scheme will help bring the university system, which was so far mostly limited to teaching, into mainstream research and enable the young faculty there to participate in cutting-edge research
Chairman University Grants Commission, Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar, said that this scheme would provide much-needed research opportunities to the faculties of state universities, 45% of which are located in rural areas.

Kerala CM launched Eggs and Milk Scheme for Anganwadi Children

Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated a project of the Women and Child Development department. This project helps to provide milk and eggs to children at all Anganwadis in the state in a bid to improve their nutrition levels. The state government has set aside over Rs. 61.5 crore to include milk and eggs in the Anganwadi menu this financial year.
Under this scheme, which is considered as a first in the country, each child would be given 125 ml of milk two days a week for 44 weeks (10 months) and an egg twice a week.
Under this project, four lakh children in the age group of 3-6 from the 33,115 anganwadis of the state would receive eggs and milk twice a week.
The introduction of milk and eggs for Anganwadi children is intended to improve their nutritional parameters and assumes significance as ending hunger is one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations.

Telangana to Launch Insurance Scheme to Support Bereaved Weavers' Families

Aiming to provide financial support to the bereaved families of handloom and power loom weavers in Telangana, the state government would launch the 'Nethana Beema' scheme on August 7.
Telangana government is implementing various welfare schemes to uplift the weaver's community in the state.
The families of the deceased weaver will receive an amount of Rs. 5 lakh under the scheme.
The Department of Handlooms and Textiles of the state government will be the nodal agency for the implementation of this scheme.

Lok Sabha passes Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2021

The Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2021 was passed by Lok Sabha. The bill, first introduced in Lok Sabha by the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on December 17, 2021, amends the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
The bill aims to implement the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and expand the number of species protected by the convention. CITES is a convention that requires countries to regulate the trade of all listed specimens through permits and regulate the possession of live animal specimens so it does not threaten the survival of the species.

Parliament Passes Bill to Ban Funding of Weapons of Mass Destruction

Parliament approved the Weapons of Mass Destruction Bill, with the Rajya Sabha clearing it.
The approval of the Bill, which tightens the noose around financiers, came on a day the review conference of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty (NPT) began in New York. India is among the handful of countries that is not a member of the NPT despite possessing nuclear weapons.
The Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Amendment Bill, 2022, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on April 5, 2022.
The Bill amends the earlier WMD Act of 2005 with the focus on tightening the provisions on financing. The Bill bars persons from financing any prohibited activity related to weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems.

RS Passes Indian Antarctic Bill

The Rajya Sabha passed the Indian Antarctic Bill 2022 amid sloganeering by the opposition MPs which forced the adjournment of the House.
The Lok Sabha had given its approval to the bill on July 22.
The Indian Antarctic Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha by Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh. The bill was passed with a voice vote after a brief discussion amid protests by the opposition members.
The bill seeks to protect the environment of the Antarctic along with dependent and associated ecosystems and to give effect to the Antarctic Treaty. India has two active research stations in the Antarctic -- Maitri and Bharti.
The bill proposes to prohibit Indian expedition to Antarctica without a permit or written authorisation of another party to the Antarctic Treaty. It also provides for inspection by an officer appointed by the government and for a penalty for contravention of certain provisions of the legislation.

PM Launches Power Ministry's Flagship Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 'revamped distribution sector scheme' to improve the operational efficiency and financial sustainability of power distribution companies.
The ministry of power's flagship revamped distribution sector scheme is aimed at improving the operational efficiencies and financial sustainability of the discoms and power departments. With an outlay of over Rs. 3 trillion over a period of five years from FY 2021-22 to FY 2025-26, the scheme aims to provide financial assistance to DISCOMS for modernization and strengthening of distribution infrastructure, focussing on the improvement of the reliability and quality of supply to end consumers.
The scheme also aims to reduce the AT&C (aggregate technical and commercial) losses to pan-India levels of 12-15% and the ACS-ARR (average cost of supply-average revenue realized) gap to zero by 2024-25 by improving the operational efficiencies and financial sustainability.
