Former Mexican President Luis Echeverria Passes Away

Luis Echeverria Alvarez, the former President of Mexico who served from 1970 to 1976, died at the age of 100.
Echeverria, a career lawyer and member of Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party, made Mexico's international relations a priority and was known, among other things, for promoting the Charter of Economic Rights and Duties of States at the United Nations in 1972.
He also initiated the establishment of diplomatic relations with China in February 1972.

India's Pallavi Singh Bags the Mrs. Universe Divine Crown in South Korea

Pallavi Singh, from India, bagged the Mrs Universe Divine Title at the finals held at Yeosu City, South Korea. Pallavi Singh hails from Kanpur. She made India proud in this contest that saw participation from 110 countries. This is indeed a proud moment for India. Pallavi Singh was the only contestant from Asia in the Mrs Universe contest. She has demonstrated the strong will and commitment of Indian women to excel in all walks of life.
Pallavi Singh won the title of Mrs India held in Jaipur in 2020. She then won the title of Mrs Indo-Asia Universe in the Asia-level competition held in Delhi in October 2021.

Noted Social Worker Avdhash Kaushal Passes Away

Noted social worker and Padma Shri awardee Avdhash Kaushal passed away. He was 87.
Kaushal founded the NGO, Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra (RLEK), in the late 1970s for development work among tribal hill communities in the area of Jaunsar-Bawar, a predominantly tribal belt of Dehradun district.
Over the years, he led RLEK's work on various initiatives including protecting the fragile eco-system of Doon Valley, abolition of the bonded labour system in Jaunsar-Bawar area of Dehradun and securing the rights (right to education, right to vote and livelihood rights) of marginalised communities.
One of the NGO's major victories was in the limestone quarries case it fought in the 1980s. In its the final judgment in the case, the Supreme Court had ordered the closing of the 101 mines in the Doon Valley.
In 2003, Kaushal was invited by the United Nations to the World Summit in Geneva, to chair the panel on a discussion on the importance of local content within information and communication technology. Kaushal was also nominated as a member of the international committee to probe into war crimes and disappearances in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the civil war in that country.

According to Vishwalok Nath, director, ESPL, Tiger Shroff played a key role in making ESPL a household name in its first season. "Shroff's popularity and fan following among the youth and millennial audiences helped us to engage and influence gamers across the country. His star power also helped push Esports to the mainstream.

'Father of Internet in India', B. K. Syngal Dies

Brijendra K. Syngal, former Chairman of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), passed away. He was 82.
Syngal, who referred to as the father of the Indian Internet, was known for his strong views and fearlessness in taking on the establishment. As the Chairman of VSNL, he was unofficially known as the 'bulldozer' for his ability to push through bureaucratic hurdles, as a result of which VSNL grew from a $125 million company in 1991 into a $1.65 billion communications giant by 1998.

Former Angolan President José Eduardo Dos Santos Passes Away

Angola's former President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who ruled Africa's second-biggest oil producer for nearly four decades, died. He was 79 years old.
One of Africa's longest serving leaders, dos Santos stepped down five years ago. His rule was marked by a civil war lasting nearly three decades against U.S.-backed UNITA rebels, which he won in 2002, and a subsequent oil-fuelled boom.

Gita Gopinath Becomes 1st Woman to Feature on IMF's 'Wall of Former Chief Economists'

India-born Gita Gopinath became the first woman and second Indian to feature on the 'Wall of Former Chief Economists' of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The first Indian to achieve the honour was Raghuram Rajan who was Chief Economist and Director of Research of IMF between 2003 and 2006. Gopinath was appointed as IMF Chief Economist in October 2018 and was later promoted as the IMF's First Deputy Managing Director in December last year.

Shinzo Abe, former Japan PM, Dies

Former Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated in Nara while campaigning for the upcoming election.
Abe was making a campaign speech on a street outside the train station ahead of election to the upper house of Japan's parliament.
Current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida (as in 2022), widely considered Abe's protege, termed the attack barbaric.
Shinzo Abe was a Japanese politician who served as Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020. He was the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japanese history.

OPEC Head Mohammad Barkindo Dies

OPEC Secretary General, Nigeria's Mohammad Barkindo, died unexpectedly at the age of 63, leaving the oil cartel without a head at a tumultuous time for the markets.
Barkindo headed the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries since 2016 and was scheduled to be replaced by Kuwait's Haitham Al-Ghais next month.
Under his stewardship, the cartel forged ties with 10 other oil-producing countries, such as Russia, to form a wider group known as OPEC+ in a bid to better tame global oil prices, rocked by the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and more recently the war in Ukraine.

Gandhian Gopinathan Nair No More

Gandhian Gopinathan Nair, a social worker who participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942, and imbibed the principles of peace and non-violence in everyday life, passed away. He was 99.
Born in Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram on July 7, 1922, Nair served as chairman of the Kerala Mahatma Gandhi National Memorial Trust, managed by the Union Government.
A recipient of the Padma Shri in 2016, Nair had past association with the Bhoodan and Gramdan movements led by Vinoba Bhave.

Jayshree Ullal, Billionaire Indian-American CEO, Among Richest Self-made Women in US

Jayshree Ullal, CEO of Arista Networks, is one of only five Indian-Americans on Forbes' list of America's richest self-made women. With a net worth of $1.9 billion Ullal ranked 15th on the list.
Forbes released its eighth annual list of America's richest self-made women last month. Jayshree Ullal is the richest Indian-American on the list.
The other four women are Neerja Sethi ranked 24th, Neha Narkhede ranked 57th, Indira Nooyi ranked 85th and Reshma Shetty.
